Now this is just silly. The base (whole of 9.0) was just added to apt. Now I have over 1031 pkgs being upgraded because the packages in base are newer then the cd versions. The updated packages were not in update as they most likely just should have been but now it looks like pretty much an entire system upgrade. WOW! Isn't this just silly. Get:1 ftp://ftp.gwdg.de SuSE/9.0-i386/base glibc 2.3.2-92 (what apt is getting) The glibc that installed from the cd's is version "glibc-2.3.2-88". I think next time I'm just going to wait for 9.1 to hit the ftp site before upgrading anything but security based issues. There have been like 3 updates to KDE and now we have YaKDEu. Amazing. ;) BTW..treat the Gnome 2.4.x packages like the brown acid at Woodstock..stay away from the Gnome 2.4 pkgs. ;) -- Ben Rosenberg ---===--- #147972 ---===--- mailto:ben@whack.org -- Why do we bother with a suicide watch when someone is on deathrow? Umm..yes. I would need base if I do not want to be sticking the cd's in every time I need a dependency filled. :) That's what makes having the whole distro up on the ftp site so convenient. :) My point was that they didn't put things like the glibc upgrade into the updates directory and if needed upgrading they should have done that. Once apt is finished squaring stuff it won't be an issue. I was just taken aback by the amount of updates. -- Ben Rosenberg ---===--- #147972 ---===--- mailto:ben@whack.org -- Why do we bother with a suicide watch when someone is on deathrow? Now there's a feature request I would love to see, instead of adding base, to have apt source the dvd/cdrom set (maybe easiest with the dvd) to find the 'base' equivilant, to avoid hundreds of upgraded packages that are not upgrades. *grin*, my reply was more or less ironic on the other hand is there a possibility to use the apt-cdrom with the suse dvd ? Yes, i'm already thinking about mirroring things like usr-local-bin etc. maybe not directly on my colocation (bandwith ok, but the server is not that fast), maybe renting some space somewhere by our lug (L4L). -- Frederik Vos <fvos@vosberg.be> VosBerg@SuSE & L4L

If you own the dvd you can make this yourself rather easily: It's described here: http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/message.php?msg_id=6400724 -- Richard Bos Without a home the journey is endless

Great instructions. It would have worked except for one tiny little problem, I didn't have 40G free for the apt repository. just to share ... I have installed SUSE 9 via FTP, and all went fine. The location was in UK IP:195.40.6.46 (or 41) path: /pub/suse/i386/9.0 ftp://ftp.plig.org/pub/suse/i386/9.0

That's not correct, it's only 38M (compared to 38G it's just a fraction ;) To get around the problem you need a newer version of apt4rpm, the version you need is 0.65.3, which is available from sourceforge or the SUSE-9.0 apt repository. http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=35354 -- Richard

Next step is to create a pre/post install script that (u)mount the dvd for you ;) And at the same time mount /usr, /opt etc writable/readable.... -- Richard Bos Without a home the journey is endless

Ben, you should now that if you would diff the changelogs of this packages, you will not find more changes than CD set + updates. But if there is a fix for one package, we rebuild everything which depend on it. I was just being cranky and ranting a bit. It's been this way since I started using apt with 8.0 :) I just wanted to warn those who added the base directory that they were in for a large download. :) You know by now that sometimes I just sound off. ;) -- Ben Rosenberg ---===--- #147972 ---===--- mailto:ben@whack.org -- Why do we bother with a suicide watch when someone is on deathrow?
