[opensuse] Scary Suse? R me being hax0red?
Some sudo command give me the funny reply?! What the hecks? Is this serious? Found on a current leap 42.2
sudo smbstatus -L root's password: Listen, burrito brains, I don't have time to listen to this trash.
Never seen this message before on a bad password typo? Suse is scaring me :( -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
Looks like an easter egg: https://www.linux.com/news/10-truly-amusing-easter-eggs-linux Sudo Insult Me Please Raise your hand if you’ve always wanted your computer to insult you when you do something wrong. Hell. I know I have. Try this: Type “sudo visudo” to open the “sudoers” file. In the top of that file you’ll likely see a few lines that start with “Defaults”. At the bottom of that list add “Defaults insults” and save the file. Now, whenever you mistype your sudo password, your system will lob insults at you. Confidence boosting phrases such as “Listen, burrito brains, I don’t have time to listen to this trash.”, “Are you on drugs?” and “You’re mind just hasn’t been the same since the electro-shocks, has it?”. This one has the side-effect of being a rather fun thing to set on a co-worker's computer. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

It is something a student would do, but I would never play that joke on a coworker. They might sue me for bulling in the job. :-| The default in openSUSE since some years has been to disable insults, but the default for the rpm was to activate it. Not serious. I don't play those jokes even on myself. You should have this in the config: ## Do not insult users when they enter an incorrect password. Defaults !insults - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. So are you guys saying that some recent update for su or sudo or whatever package brought in the insults as a new default? i never even remotely heard about such a feature of su sudo ever in the past. Very eerie and weird :( what the heck is leap becoming? i have often mistyped some root passwords in the past and only seen these insults on a machine today. :( who is coming up with these ideas and changes and most importantly, why? :( -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Just check your config file. The default in the binary has always been to insult, unless suse applied a patch to disable and then forgot to apply. I don't know about such a patch. The *suse default has been to disable insults in the config file, so what you have to check is that config. An update does not change the config file. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. I never changed my suoders file on those defaults, I maybe only added or changed it a long time ago to ask for the root password instead of my own password. This machine is not being used by anyone else. And I dont play around with settings that much. That is why I was starting this thread as I have never seen these insults before and I *have* used sudo before and I bet I have not always immediately typed the right password. Sometimes, I dont uderstand computers how it is even remotely possible that things change all of a sudden when I remember no wrongdoings and especially no changed behavior on my side :( -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Well, again, do check that config file now! Does it have: ## Do not insult users when they enter an incorrect password. Defaults !insults ? If not, add it. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. As I commented, maybe openSUSE applied a patch and now got removed in an update. I can not verify this, only a guess. I also guess that SLE would do this. At least I would, in their feet. I suggest you report this in a Bugzilla. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. My config file on my main machine is accurate, but I'm almost positive I've seen the insults before on an openSUSE machine. Too many PCs floating around out there to be sure. Greg -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

The default upstream, as far as I know, is to insult. openSUSE or SUSE decided, years ago, to disable this behaviour (after discussions on mail lists) in the default config file. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. The last distro I saw insults turned on by default was OpenBSD. For some reason, it seemed right at home there. -- After all is said and done, more is said than done.
