Postfix not listening on remote smtp
I have a new SuSE 8.0 install. I cannot get postfix to accept smtp-connects and telnet's to port 25 from other machines on my local net. /etc/sysconfig/mail is changed to SMTPD_LISTEN_REMOTE="yes" but that did not seem to make any difference. I have run out of ideas. mvh... Morten Christensen

rcpostfix start
Postfix is running all the time. I have made lot of "postfix reload"'s and rebooted the box to be sure. mvh... Morten Christensen

OK, so then what do the logs say when you start it?
Sorry for butting in on the thread, but I haven't seen anybody mention SuSEconfig. I always run it after editing any of the files in /etc/sysconfig/, and before restarting the affected service. I don't know if my practice is necessary or superfluous. How is one to know if the configuration for a particular service is built in SuSEconfig, or within the 'rcxxxx start' process? Rick Green

I cannot find anything in /var/log/messages /var/log/mail says postfix/postfix-script: starting the Postfix mail system postfix/master[1510]: daemon started /var/log/mail tells about smtp connects from localhost, but nothing about attempts to connect to smtp from other machines. I am quite sure, the firewall is not running. The firewall-log says nothing. mvh... Morten Christensen

OK, then what's the output of /usr/sbin/postconf? Either you've told smtpd to only listen on lo or you (or your ISP) are blocking connections to port 25. -- -ckm

That made the trick. I was not paying attention on /etc/postfix/main.cf's "resume" in the buttom, which overrides the settings above it. After the change, postfix reload was not enough. I had to reboot. mvh... Morten Christensen On Friday 19 July 2002 08:31, Morten Christensen wrote:

Telnet connects on localhost. It is from other machines on my local net, smtp is not listening. PuTTY says "Network error: Connection refused." mvh... Morten Christensen
