I was at the SuSE hardware database, saw many CD -RW that are listed as supported , but pages don't go into detail on how well they work with linux. Are there some better know rewritable cd burners for linux? How about DVD, are there any that play DVD as well? I realize DVD isn't supported in linux, but if it played in windows and the cd-rw worked in linux, that would be ok. If you check out the brochures of different makes, you may find that versions are available for both IDE and SCSI. If the same number occurs for both types, it's highly likely that the module ide-scsi.o works for the IDE version. HP's are very good candidates for your shopping bag.

Interesting! And it doesn't require WinXX software to run? The reason I ask is that at work I have an HP CD-Writer 8100 connected to my box. It is a USB device and I had to move from Win95 to Win98SE to run it. To make matters worse, the USB connection is such a bad implementation that while I am buring a CD if I run any other software at all the burning process dies and the CD is spoiled. I would never recommend a USB solution to anyone right now. USB stinks. JLK -- Scientific theories, according to Sir Karl Popper, can be "falsified," or proven wrong, by experiment. Of course not :-)

Win 95 B & C had limited USB support only.

AFAIK that is a Win restriction, not USB. Unlike Linux, Win does not control processes in seperate "envelopes", so any app can (and frequently does) interrupt other apps. Burning CDs requires an uninterrupted flow of data to and from the buffers. Hence the fact that Win has only limited support for multi-tasking,while most Unix derivatives have true multi-tasking support as a direct result of their networking/ file sharing heritage.

I have had excellent results with my Yamaha CD-RW If you are looking for a CD-RW/DVD-ROM combination drive your options are Ricoh, Samsung and Toshiba. (These are the OEMs, don't be surprised to find other brand names. IIRC, Memorex sells Ricoh). Another option is DVD-RAM manufactured by Panasonic, Toshiba and Hitachi. I also understand that all are supported since about kernel 2.2.15. (Again these are only the OEMs) FWIW, I've also used Samsung, Panasonic and Toshiba DVD-ROM drives with success. Good luck, Tim

Any suggestions on where to buy one? My wife called elinux.com but they said there is no such a thing as a CD-RW/DVD-ROM available. Like wise they could not tell her any cd-rw that worked with SuSE, told her she had to research the SuSE web site. It's a shame, we would have purchased from them had they been able to answer any of our questions, and tell us what to buy. They had one listed for $269.00 ( QPS) on their web site, but the person talking with my wife didn't know anything about it. thanks in advance,
joe

thanks in advance,
I couldn't reach the elinux site, but I found both the toshiba and ricoh at http://www.megahaus.com listed under cd-rewritable. The two listed are the earlier models (ricoh mp9060 and toshiba sdr1002) and both run about $225 USD. Personally I'd lean toward the toshiba. You may also be able to find them on http://www.pricewatch.com but will probably have to search by model number. That said, listed by manufacturer and model number Toshiba sdr1002 and sdr2002 Ricoh mp9060 and mp9120 Samsung sm304 (I've also heard of variants with a trailing "a" or "b".) Also a quick search on http://www.google.com for "cdrw dvd combo" seemed to produce a number of good hits. Good luck, Tim

CD-RWs are very well supported under Linux. You can do whatever you want with them.

If you really must have a combo drive, then I would recommend either a Toshiba or a Ricoh drive. If burning CDs is more important, then I would go with the Ricoh, but if reading is more your thing, then the Toshiba is faster at reads. They're both high quality drives. DVD video is not necessarily unsupported under linux... check out these two URLs for more info: http://www.opendvd.org http://www.linuxvideo.org Hope that helps, Chris -- __ _ -o)/ / (_)__ __ ____ __ Chris Reeves /\\ /__/ / _ \/ // /\ \/ / ICQ# 22219005 _\_v __/_/_//_/\_,_/ /_/\_\
