For years, I have been copying the full ISO to a USB stick for installation. I just realized I should now be using the NET install image, because my Internet speed is faster than USB 2! Until a couple of years ago, my download bandwidth was 75 Mb or less. It's now officially 500 Mb, but actually around 900 Mb. USB 2 tops out 480, assuming appropriate hardware.

{chuckle} :-) I wonder what is the read speed for a DVD. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from Elesar, using openSUSE Leap 15.3)

That depends on how fast your drive can spin it. I haven't used DVD images for years. The first time I installed Linux, Slackware, it was from floppies! Incidentally, my ISP currently offers 2.5 Gb symmetrical Internet over fibre and plan to offer 8 Gb soon. My home network is "only" 1 Gb, so even with coax I'm approaching the limit. Here's a speedtest from a couple of days ago. https://www.speedtest.net/result/13265977448

why is your upload so slow? I get 980+ with att fiber. -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri Photos: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/piwigo paka @ IRCnet oftc

I'm not on fibre. I'm on DOCSIS over coax.

Don't laugh, I installed the NET iso from CD.... I have hundreds to burn... -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

More than ten years ago, we switched to fibre at 1Gbit/s. Even before that, at meagre ADSL speeds, I still installed over the net. I wrote one or two articles on how to cache with squid, then I started running our own local mirror. Installing from media, USB or DVD - wow, different era. My current provider is offering 10 and 25Gbit, at the same price. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (23.8°C)

At my current location, I can not install from Internet. My router has a SIM card, so using G4 mobile internet with usually 25% of a signal, capped to 25 GB/month. I do not know the actual speed, but browsing seems slow. So if I were to upgrade (I ain't) I would download the DVD elsewhere and use that. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. My ISP provides unlimited data. They also provide excellent IPv6 on both cable and cell networks. I can tether to my cell phone and get IPv6 addresses. My data is also unlimited on the cell phone, but throttled after 15 GB.

Yep, I used to do the same. Years ago, I used to work at IBM and had decent Internet (a blazing 45 Mb for about 4000 employees), so I'd burn the CDs at work and bring them home to where I was still on dial up.

Oh, I forget: I am on CG-NAT, my external IP is on 10.*.*.* . No IPv6, of course. This is temporary, I don't live here. I can get ADSL, not fibre, if I want. At home I have symmetrical fibre.

I have put the ISOs on a server and used that with the NET install. However, for years DVD and USB stick were faster than my Internet connection. I just realized this about install speed today, when I updated my ThinkPad and realized it only had USB 2 ports. My desktop has USB 3, but all my USB sticks are only USB 2.

NET installations here began with SuSE 8.0, over 20 years ago. NET was and remains my primary method, usually without downloading any .iso or burning anything, by downloading only the installer's linux and initrd and loading them with Grub. -- Evolution as taught in public schools is, like religion, based on faith, not based on science.
