[opensuse] Canon Pixma MP830 problem
I just set up the printer, self-test worked, connected the printer to a USB port on my Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop. Yast spotted both the printer and the scanner. The printer test failed. I checked and found that the printer was listed as a parallel printer connected to lp0. I changed the setting to USB printer only to get the message, "No USB devices found. It seems that your USB bus is not properly configured" I changed the connection to a USB connection that works with an external storage device. Same message. What do I do now? -- Best regards, Dennis J. After asking for advise for what kind of printer to get you went out and got a Canon, IMHO the worst manufacturer for Linux support? Canon seems to be the most Linux unfriendly printers around. I think you will have problems with that one. I am not saying Canon printers are junk, but their Linux support is. -- Joe Morris Registered Linux user 231871 running openSUSE 10.3 x86_64 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hi Dennis. I had problems a while back with a canon Pixma ip4000. Support for canon printers under linux I found is not strong. Many google searches came up with using different canon models that would give me basic printing abilities but not the full scope of the printer. e.g. reduced resolution and sometimes no cd printing. Gimp + gutenprint got me a bit nearer. I ended up downloading a driver file from www.turboprint.de . This solved the problem and also gives full printer utilities like ink levels, clean heads, print head alignment etc. Note, the download is free but asks you to pay about £25 for a licence key which without, the printouts have a logo on them saying printed using turboprint. I've used it for 2 years now and although the payment was a nuisance, the printer has been great. First I would suggest google for something to give a compatable driver or workaround and the the gimp + gutenprint which gives you printouts but not for the highest resolution in my case, yours might be ok. I downloaded the gutenprint rpm and installed it. I went to TurboPrint setup and tried to load the Canon PIXMA MP830 driver only to find that TurboPrint insisted on the /dev/lp0 device. I went to Yast2/Hardware/Printer and noted that the printer was not spotted by the printer application. I went further and loaded the MP830 driver(which I assume was the one I downloaded from Gutenprint) and tested the connection: I was informed that I was using "a different spooler". The queue printer set up could not be saved because "selected spooler does not support it". I looked around for a spooler selector and found none. Can you help me further? I know the connection between the computer and the MP830 works because when I turned on the computer, the MP830 (which I left on since the last session) woke up (the LED screen turned on and the motor made a noise). In the turbo print setup. If you select add. It asks you where/how printer is connected. Although it may only give you a option like /dev/lp0, Is not possible to type in /dev/usb0 and try that. Some bits of background info from my experiences. I have been swapping about between Suse and Kubuntu various releases for the last 2 or 3 years.I have had a hicup with suse 9 or 10 and this current one 10.3 with turboprint and an odd ubunto version. odd tool elements wouldn't work and sometimes couldn't get it to work at all. I may be wrong but I get the feeling that if you try to get the distro to set up the printer first before using turboprint, that sometimes throws a wobbly. e.g. In suse 10.3 I thought I would try yast first to see if by canon printer was supported out of the box but it wasn't so I installed turboprint. Now in suse, everytime I start the printer, I click on print and nothing happens. Open up turboprint setup and I don't have to configure anything, touch anything but the printing starts!. Under Kubuntu the printing starts but there is a delay for each print job. I tend to experiment a lot and sometimes I end up reinstalling the distro to get rid of all my errors. On reinstall, printing sometimes is ok? why? Over the last 15 years I've tried many distros and I've found that one distro installs flawlessly and snother has problems with various things. But when I try on a different machine, the distro that gave problems installs ok and the other one that was ok on machine 1 is now ok for machine 2. I notice a reference you made to printer using a different spooler. Could this be that turboprint has done something? perhaps start up turboprint setup and delete any reference to a printer. Sorry if this doesn't help. I tend to need to be at the problem site to try things out. I just got SuSE 10.3. Are you suggesting that I not install the PIXMA MP830 using Yast in the installation process? -- Best regards, Dennis J. Thanks to all who offered help. 10.3 recognizes the printer and the scanner, so, so far, all is well with the Canon PIXMA MP830. dj tuchler -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
