[opensuse] Syncing Blackberry on Linux
I just found out that Blackberry uses a proprietary OS that has nothing
to do with Microsoft, so I am removing the heretic question. Since
Blackberry has software to transfer data from Palm to Blackberry, the
only question I have is syncing the Blackberry on Linux. Apparently
their are a couple of OpenSource projects, such as Barry and OpenSync.
I'm just curious if anyone on this list has been syncing on Linux.

I think someone here has done so. All I've done is install the hack to allow openSUSE to charge my bb. Every few weeks, I write from my corporate email asking about linux support. Of course, i get the usual " we only support lesser operating systems" response. :P -- kai www.filesite.org || www.4thedadz.com || www.perfectreign.com remember - a turn signal is a statement, not a request -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Funambol is the most reliable choice with a few codicils... 1) The Thunderbird Funambol plugin is currently broken (at least for me on both Windows and Linux). An alternative (TSync) does something but I have yet to figure out what !? 2) The current Evolution client works, but needs manual compilation and text editor configuration. 3) I do not use the KOrganiser/KMail stuff, but the sync support is not really geared up for connection to a SymcML server. 4) Funambol requires that you run both Tomcat, and a database backend. MySQL is not one of the supported databases but with a little tweaking you can use MySQL. 5) Calendaring is a bit weak. 6) Not very easy to setup. and one possible useful bonus... Funambol can be configured to do push mail, i.e. send mail to your phone. It is probably more OMA standards complaint than the alternative below. An alternative is eGroupware, however I think elements of the synchronisation need more work, it seems to be good with calendars but not very useful with contacts (tends to duplicate entries). There is a version with GroupDAV support which you could use with the SoGO connectors (but I do not know whether there is a SoGO connector for the Blackberry but I would surprised if there wasnt).

This is fixed in egw 1.5 trunk which is also very stable. The duplication problem does remain in egw 1.4.. -- David C. Rankin, J.D., P.E. I would expect so... http://www.egroupware.org/sync describes the sync options for egroupware (and to be truthful not completely helpful)...

the funanabol site *is* a bit obscure on this ... however below gives some of the options... http://www.funambol.com/opensource/projects.php
Many Thanks
HTH A personal viewpoint is a funambol plugin for egroupware might might be a good idea.... mainly because funambol is very good at what it does and egroupware is excellent at what it does, and I see little mileage in reinventing wheels...

All looks good. I was a bit frustrated on the funambol site. I could not find which physical interfaces were supported. Or, must my phone access funambol via http? That is, no bluetooth or USB cables? I can see that in a large organization, such interfaces would be unlikely. But I am looking for something for my own personal use. Funambol is fine if you are "standalone", but what if you are (like me) using a company owned blackberry which is configured to work with their exchange server and all you want to do is keep things like your tasks and phone book synced on your linux laptop? A WAY nicer thing would be a way to use my bb in places where there is no internet for access to the internet via wireless (no matter how slow). wcn Carlos Lorenzo Matés wrote:
