3D Labs VX1 Graphics card driver for 7.x - help!

Hello, I finally got my new HD and am installing Linux on it while I sort out my IDE RAID issues... While running Yast2 to install Suse 7.1 I reach the point where it is checking the video/graphics card. It actually finds a driver and puts the card configuration window. My problems are: 1. It only give 640 x 480 resolution option. Others are greyed out. This card clearly has much higher res. How do I get better resolution selected? Is there anothe rdriver for this card? 2. When I try the settings TEST it doesn't do anything. I just see the dialog / settings window flash again. If I hit ESC as they ask nothing happens. If I hit next it tells me run TEST first. I hit TEST many times but when I hit next, it tells me run TEST first... 3. I disabled the configure X11 and was able to finish Linux installation (i.e. I got past item #2). However, when the machine boots, it comes up in command line mode and logs me in in command line mode. I guess the graphic card driver never installed. I tried launching Gnome and got lots of X11 errors. What should I do? Thanks for y'all's help in advance. You could try checking the horizontal and vertical resolution from Monitor documentation. I did a search on the Internet to get this information. Then put the info in manually in Sax2. Brian Marr On Saturday 15 September 2001 04:01, you wrote:

this card is not supported but there is an x-server you can download and test before you buy it from xigraphics.com (it might be xi-graphics.com). There is a way though to get minimal graphics with the card by manually configuring it try using gendac in the selections and anything that says general 9you may have to do this by trial and error). It has been a year since i had it up and running and on an earlier version of suse, however i am now using a different card. If i find where the instructions are on my computer i'll e-mail them to you. in the meantime good luck Harry A. babu walad wrote:

Hi Harry, That is very odd. When I tried to run SaX2 it wouldn't and it asked me to switch to Sax (the older version) and of course Sax still cannot configure my 3DLabs VX1 card. I am using Suse 7.1 and I wonder if you are using the same version. I will follow your instructions to see what happens. I did try to configure manually in the past but I always ended up with errors. By the way, I inquired with Xig and they indicated they do *not* support the VX1 Card. I don't understand how some folks on this group are having success with the xig drivers when this is how they replied to my inquiry: ------------------------------------- babu walad wrote:

Well, perhaps I was mistaken about this, but I really don't think so. I seem to remember specifying this video card for a customer once; after it was installed and configured, the XiG people I talked to blamed it's non-working status on faulty hardware, and that the VX1 (or whatever card I spec'ed) was indeed supported. Something smells funny here, and it just might be me. :)
You have to understand that XiG makes an X server and XFree86 makes an X server; only one can run at a time. With the XiG product, you will still be able to run most if not all of your standard X11 applications seemlessly. The only exceptions I can think of are things like Qt/KDE's support of the XFree86 Render extension, which firstly means that anti-aliased fonts will not be possible, at least through this means. I cannot say that XiG's X server is any faster or more stable than XFree86-4, but benchmarking may prove them right. I *can* say, with great authority, that XFree86-3 was indeed *MUCH* slower and much less stable than XiG's product with the same hardware, application software, and Linux kernel versions. In my experience, XiG vs. XF4.1 is a tossup, with a few caveats. Their OpenGL product is a different story...much faster/better support for many 3D-capable video cards, full OpenGL certification, and point-and-click installation. I just wish I could remember what card we installed on that box...this is really getting on my nerves... ===== -- -=|JP|=- Hit me! - http://www.xanga.com/cowboydren/ Jon Pennington | Debian 2.3 -o) cowboydren @ yahoo . com | Auto Enthusiast /\\ Kansas City, MO, USA | ICQ UIN 69 67 29 31 _\_V __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
