Hi I got the following error message when trying to enter both my FAT partitions from Linux... Could not mount device. The reported error was: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hda1 missing codepage or other error. I found the following in syslog FAT: Unrecognized mount option "gid=users" or missing value FAT: Unrecognized mount option "gid=users" or missing value The problem resolves when I manually mount them from konsole... I think the problem comes from permissions which in strange way are gray and I can't modify them from the permissions tab in the properties dialog of hdas. Only advanced permissions are available. How can I correct it and what is the default permissions of the partitions? Thanks, SM

Hi
Sergey,
I got the following error message when trying to enter both my FAT partitions from Linux...
Could not mount device. The reported error was: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hda1 missing codepage or other error.
I found the following in syslog
FAT: Unrecognized mount option "gid=users" or missing value FAT: Unrecognized mount option "gid=users" or missing value
VFAT should understand both the uid and gid options. What is the mount command or fstab entry you are using?
The problem resolves when I manually mount them from konsole... I think the problem comes from permissions which in strange way are gray and I can't modify them from the permissions tab in the properties dialog of hdas. Only advanced permissions are available.
As far as I know, FAT does not support a permission scheme similar to those used with UNIX filesystems. Therefore, you cannot change permissions of individual files and directories residing on a FAT partition.
How can I correct it and what is the default permissions of the partitions?
Using the uid, gid and umask options allows for defining a default
user and permissions for the whole filesystem, not for individual
files.

Steve, Sorry for such a delay answering you, but when I was trying to boot into Linux(to check permissions), it simply hanged up giving me some errors in console... All i had to do was booting from a rescue disk, and after an unsuccessful and long tryings to fsck my Linux partition I found that the only thing I can do is just to rebuild the filesystem tree with "fsck.reiserfs --rebuild-tree /dev/hda6" After that now there is no problems with mounting my hard drives from Linux GUI, and permissions are not gray anymore... Seems everything is OK now, Thanks Sergey Steve Graegert wrote:
