Hello, I have installed SuSE 8.1 from the DVD. Now I want to copy the entire DVD into a partition of the hard disk. The problem is that I have copied al the contents of the DVD of SuSE 8.1 to the hard disk, but when I want to change the installation source in YaST2, and point to this partition, it doesn't work. Some idea ? Thanks!

You have to copy the file .S.u.S.Eblah-blah also. Normal copy operation doesn't do it because the filename starts with a dot. -- Silviu Marin-Caea Systems Engineer Linux/Unix http://www.genesys.ro Phone +40723-267961

If you use tar to copy whole trees, I find it's the most reliable: $ cd /cdrom $ tar cf - . | ( cd /imagedir; tar xfpS - ) -Nick

Sorry, I haven't found in the DVD any file called .S.u.S.E.xxxxxxx, as it exists in the DVD of the 8.0 version. Someone has copied the SuSE 8.1 DVD into a partition and made it work as a installation source for Yast2?? Thanks!

Yes it works, do the following: 1) As root, cd / 2) md SuSE-dvd (or whatever you want to call it) 3) Mount the SuSE dvd from your distribution in your cd cd/dvd drive 4) cp * /dvd/ (this will take about 15 min with a 1.8Ghz processor) 5) Open yast 2 and click on "change source of installation" 6) select the visible line and then select "delete" 7) select "add" and scroll down to find "/dev/dvd" 8) click "ok" then "finish" and exit yast2 9) unmount and remove the SuSE dvd in your cd/dvd device Use yast2 as usual as it will now "look" for the /SuSE-dvd directory on your hard disk instead of requesting you insert the dvd. Works fine on my SuSE8.1 system and saves the hassel of screwing around with the physical SuSE cd Regards, Harry On Thursday 09 January 2003 10:46 am, ximm wrote:

OOPS, step 3.5 make sure you change directory to /SuSE-dvd BEFORE doing step 4 Sorry On Thursday 09 January 2003 01:50 pm, Harry Wert wrote:

For the command line impaired I have successfully moved the dvd to hd using Konqueror. Steps I followed are: 1 Bring up File Manager in Super User Mode, 2 Find the partition/directory you want to put the dvd in, 3.Make a directory for it, I used Harry's /SuSE-dvd, 4 Mount the dvd, 5. Go to the /media/dvd or cdrom, whichever you have named it, 6. Drag everything to the directory made in step 3, 7. Wait, 8. Start up Yast and Change source, 9 . Relax and forget about inserting the dvd. Details follow: 1. From Main KDE menu, select System>File Manager-Super User Mode. 2. Enter root password. 3. I like to work with the tree on the left in Konqi so I press F-9 to get that. If anyone knows how to make it stick so i dont have to do it each time, Please tell me. I've been looking for the howto for months. 4. Bring up Disk Free which is also on the Main KDE menu, System> KDiskFree. 5. Decide where you are going to copy about 4.5 gigs of data. I chose /var cause I had goofed and made that partition to big at 9 gigs. My example will use that partition and you will simply have to substitute your choice for mine. 6. Back to Konqi (File Manager) right click on /var and select 'Create Directory'. At the next dialog name the new directory. SuSe-dvd or whatever you like. 7. Put your dvd in the drive then right click the drive icon and select Mount. 8. At Konqi, click the plus sign to the left of 'media' and then click dvd or cdrom, depending on your installation. Mine uses cdrom for both. You know you have the right one if you see a bunch of stuff on the right. you should see five directories and 17 files. 9.. Go to the Edit menu and Select All, or do a ctrl-a. 10. On the left side of Konqi, move the slider down or up til you see the directory where you wish to copy the dvd. 11. Put your cursor over any of the selected files on the right, left click and hold, then drag to the left to the new directory. When that directory becomes selected, release the left click. When the little dialog comes up, select Copy . 12. Go have a cup of coffee while the dvd is copied to the new directory. 13. Now we will go to Yast and change the source of installation. I like to use the Yast control center cause I'm lazy and dont like typing anymore than is absolutely necessary. 14. In the Yast Control Center, click on 'Change source of Installation." 15. I had to delete the URL that was originally there before it would take the new source URL. So, hilite whatever is listed and click the Delete button in the lower left portion of that window. You may be able to simply disable the selection but someone else will have to tell us if it works. 16. Now click Add and select Local directory... 17. At the next dialog I selected Browse, then clicked on the directory /var, then SuSE-dvd and then OK. The result, /var/SuSE-dvd/ , in now in the Directory path window, Click OK, and you should see that directory listed in the URL column. 18. Click Finish. You are now ready to play without having to use the dvd. For those who cannot use the dvd, you can put your cd's on the harddrive and follow the same sequence but put each in a separate directory and read the info on the left in the Change source of Installation pane. I'm sure there are many ways to do this but this worked for me and should make it easier for those who have a problem using command lines. And yes, it is more detailed than many would like to see but I think non-command line junkies deserve a little help, too. If you like it , pass it on. If you don't, let me know what is wrong and I may fix it. At any rate, have as much fun as you can. ra
