[opensuse] (coLinux) openSUSE on Windows - possible ?
H All ! I'm looking at andLinux - and I think it's great to have a Linux running on Windows, and having KDE3 integration. Isn't it ? Now What makes andLinux tick? -coLinux patched kernel (+ coFS) -andLinux as NT Service -andLinux Launcher -X Protocol -PulseAudio Just have a look at it ! ! ! http://www.andlinux.org/ It's wonderful. KDE3 apps feeling native on Windows ! WOW ! But andLinux is based upon Ubuntu, and I think, that it may be possible to build something similar for openSUSE. BTW: I think that it doesn't have to be based on coLinux - any virtualizer will do, including VMware, VirtualBox, Microsoft Virtual PC and even Qemu :) The _main_ point here is Windows flawless integration. (NT Service + andLinux Launcher) All the rest seems to be less important. X Protocol can be replaced with seamless-mode virtualization (VirtualBox 1.6 or VMware 6.5), and PulseAudio can be replaced with Sound Blaster emulation. -- -Alexey Eromenko "Technologov" -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Having just spent the best part of 2 days cleaning up a windows infection on a friends computer, I seriously doubt that this is a good idea. Why put linux on Windows? If there is a port of kde for windows, then that might work. But to install linux on windows is and have it use the M$ system is not a good thing. -- Powered by SuSE 10.0 Kernel 2.6.13 X86_64 KDE 3.4 Kmail 1.8 8:24am up 28 days 17:34, 4 users, load average: 1.13, 1.16, 1.12 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

For those of us who like to play games not available as Linux versions or not running in wine it is a good thing! As soon as we have good 3D support in virtualisation, it's redundant. It's nice for certain situations.

No, virualizers will not do. That's why coLinux is IMHO a cool hack. The point that andLinux is based on Ubuntu has bugged me too and I think something like andLinux but based on openSUSE wouldn't be such a bad idea. Please explain me, why virtualizers won't do ? -- -Alexey Eromenko "Technologov" -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Current virtualizers won't do if you need hardware 3D support for games as none of them offers it yet (and cedega also won't run all games). So you need something like coLinux to have both worlds. This is not true if your host is Windows. You can run 3D games + Linux guest. No advantage for coLinux here. I like your wiki page, but I fail to understand if it's a joke or real research. If you're serious, then we need further discussion. -- -Alexey Eromenko "Technologov" -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

You're mostly right. But you'd still need an X server to have seamless integration of GUI apps.

This is no joke. I use andLinux but I don't like Ubuntu's way of packaging so I am working this week on building a distribution of coLinux+openSUSE.

Let's talk when I have something that promises to work :) Philipp -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
