I got an ftp install ro work and tried 9.3. The system boot stable but when ever I try to configure the graphics sax2 locks the system forcing a power button hit. I had this same problem with 9.1 and 2 so I have always stayed with 9.0. The only difference is xfree in 9.0 and as of 9.1 its xorg. I figured this time try and beat the problem. The sax log is not showing any errors and the xorg log is using vesa drivers and one screen mode 800x600. I have booted and switched to runlevel 3 with the same results. Graphics cards are nvidia mx440 pci and intel 810 (disabled in bios). Can I install xfree86 from 9.0 in 9.3? or is there a sulution that I did not see via googling? Hi Jim, FWIW, at the first sign of troubles like this, my approach is to pull the add-in video card and install, fresh, using just the built-in graphics hardware. Then, after the system has been completely installed and properly updated, I try adding the card back in to see if it gets handled any differently... perhaps like an upgrade ought to be handled by a sophisticated operating system. This approach circumvents SaX2 getting misdirected or confused during the initial installation. It also ensures it is using the latest hardware database when probing and identifying the added-in "upgrade" card. Another benefit is it gets the system to a stable point where the built-in hardware is fully 'hooked' and (hopefully) controlled, as opposed to possibly acting like a phantom limb... physically attached but not configured or disabled correctly due to an inadequate (windoze only) or buggy BIOS "off" mechanism. regards, - Carl

I may well try this.

Actually I have suspected a buggy bios for some time now. The whole mother board can be flakey at times. Drops harddisks and cdroms at startup randomly. It flat out will not boot with ATI cards installed. -- James Smullins <floridaflier@cfl.rr.com>
Important Addendum: I forgot one thing: After you've 'tamed' the built-in hardware and are ready to proceed with the "upgrade"... be sure you're also installing the correct driver/module for that card. Search the SLE archive and nvidia's website for tips and instructions on installing the necessary software. - Carl P.S.: a searchable archive of SLE is maintained here: http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=suse-linux-e&r=1&w=2
