[opensuse] 11.4 and codecs
This is not a new issue, but I've never been sure of the best way to do this on previous installs. What is the best way to install additional codecs on openSuse, and specifically 11.4? At the moment I need mp3 and mplayer, perhaps others but not sure. Is the Unofficial Guide to openSuse 11.4 ( http://opensuse-guide.org/index.php) a reliable place to do this via their one-click method? For MPlayer. use the Pacman repo: http://en.opensuse.org/Additional_package_repositories#Packman In YaST select: Software-->Software Repositories-->Add--> Click Community Repositories and Click Next Packman will be in the list. One-Click Codecs: http://opensuse-community.org/1-click-collection Good luck -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

(1) Add pacman and videolan repositories (2) In Yast->Software Management; search 'codec', then install what you want (3) In Yast->Software Management; search 'dvd', then install what you want (4) repeat (3) for mpg, mp3, wav, vorbis, ogg, etc... (1) & (2) will get 99% of what you need :) -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

No, never mix those repositories. Better use packman only, because it is more complete.

OK, understood. However, the one-click method added in both repositories, and updated codecs and libs presumably from both. What do you recommend to do at this point. Would things work properly if I disabled the videolan repo and simply update from pacman only? Usually this will not install the corresponding packman packages, because they are from different vendors. You must force the system to take the packages from packman. What I would do is 'zypper dup --from Packman' (assuming packman is the repos name). The yast package manager has a similar ability. You must do that only once, after that you can - and should - update the normal way.

I use both without problems. Once upon a time there was a problem that was solved. Or, you talking about some recent problems in the last few months.
