Hi: I have some problems compiling software, after installing gcc 3.3.1. Other updates may have happened through YOU. What I would like to do, is restore my system to the way it was before. Since I don't know what other dependencies may have changed, I was wondering if reinstalling from CD's, as an update, would do the trick. Any ideas? Doing a fresh install erasing everything would be a last resort, to be avoided if at all possible. Thank you. -- Alfredo J. Cole http://www.acyc.com http://www.clshonduras.com
I was faced with the same dilemma earlier and thought I'd try reinstalling to see what would happen. I've just recovered from a problem that I can't be certain was due to gcc 3.3.1. When I did a reboot there was some sort of disk corruption it couldn't recover from, even when booting from timos-rescuecd and running reiserfsck. I reinstalled (New Install) from DVD, not formatting my partitions, I just installed over what was there and I have had the system back up for about 45 minutes. It left my network settings, /etc/exports, /etc/resolv.conf and most things intact. The version of gcc that was there after the reinstall, was the original SuSE gcc 3.3 (20030226). I've since reinstalled the updated 3.3, staying away from 3.3.1. Regards Sid. Alfredo Cole wrote:
