Hi, I havw downloaded VMware 3.0.rpm and now struggling to get it working with WinXP Pro under SuSE 7.3 (SuSE 7.3 alone works without any problems whatsoever). I have Athlon XP 1600+, 512 MB DDR RAM, m/b with VIA KT266A chipset (Chaintech m/b), Geforce MX400 Video card with 64 MB DDR, 40 GB HD, Sound blaster, running SuSE 7.3 with SuSE 2.4.16 kernel, XFree 4.2, latest glibc updates from SUSE ftp. Of course, I have compiled and installed NVIDIA kernel module and NVIDIA GLX. The vmware 3.0 have been installed and configured without problems, Win XP Pro have been installed on virtual disk on ReiserFS root partition with bridged networking, 10 GB have been allocated for virtual disk (30 GB free in partiiton). In short, Win XP Pro have not been able to work more than 20 min. vmware crashed with segmentation fault, or killed XFree, or just freeze machine with strange video artifacts. I have changed AGP (and other) settings for nvidia, tried XFree 4.1 and 4.2 (configured with YaST), upgraded glibc, wiped out vmware virtual disk and reinstalled WinXP Pro from scratch again, checked ReiserFS partition for corruption, removed sound, floppy, unwanted port support from vmware settings, reinstalled vmware rpm, but nothing helped. I just could not figure out what may be the source of problem. My vmware trial time is almost over, as well as my patience. May be I should try another version of Windows, or go to Win4Lin? Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Andrei

I haven't tried VMware 3.0 yet, but 2.0.4 works nicely for me.

I run it on a more modest hardware, it's IBM Thinkpad T21, P3-800, 128M RAM. I use SuSE 7.3, kernel 2.4.16, XFree 4.1

I don't know your particular reason for using Win XP, my requirements were quite simple: to run CheckPoint Management Client (a Windows-only application), so I installed NT4+SP6 on a virtual disk.

I keep my VMware session running for a whole day sometimes and experience no problem. I usually suspend its session, so the next time I fire it up, I just press resume button, and I am there.

Win4Lin emulates Win98, IIRC. So if have no any special reason for XP, try NT4. It was (is?) most reliable (if MS may be reliable ;-) of MS OSes. -Kastus
