Ever since I upgraded to 10.1, my screen saver has not worked. I don't know why I have taken this long to address the problem, but, anyway, I'd like to get it working again. As far as I can tell, everything is still set up the same as it was in 10.0. If I test it, it works fine, but it just never comes on. Anyone else experienced this problem since migrating to 10.1? I have an experience that may or may not be related. If my laptop is plugged in to power, the screen saver works. It I unplug for even 30s and then plug it back in to power, the screen saver no longer comes on. Instead, the screen just goes blank. The only way to make the screen saver work again is to shut down and restart while still plugged in to power. On Tuesday 25 July 2006 21:41, Greg Wallace wrote:

If you are running KDE my post a few weeks ago might help you.
I was experiencing an almost identical problem with 10.1 which I resolved by going into "KDE desktop configuration -> Display -> Power Management setting" then setting "Enable display power management" to on and setting the 3 options there to disable.
It sounds illogical and I don't know why it should work, but it works for me. YMMV.

Yes. Didn't have any major issues with this with 9.3 until I switched to 10.1 Greg Wallace wrote:

I think I'm completely up to date on updates. As far as a Video driver, I'm using (and have been for a long time) an old Radeon VE. Hi, yes, i had this problem as well. After installing 2 fresh 10.1 (a Desktop (nVidia), a laptop (ATI)), it was OK. After updating all recommended packages via ZEN, i started having this problem: no screensaver.

And there, after tweaking the recommended packages, i did notice one thing: the update of the kdebase package seems to be the culprit. When upgrading (YAST, ZEN, smart...): kdebase3-3.5.1-69 to kdebase3-3.5.1-69.15 i lost my screensaver.

I wonder how much people is affected with the above recommended update, but at this time, i rolled back to the kdebase3-3.5.1-69 and the screensavers are back again. Both with nVidia and ATI. Since then i do not install them. Anyway, this is a personnal choice, as there might have good reasons to upgrade that KDE essential package. But with the .15, couldn't find a way to have the screensavers (unless using xscreensaver) What i find strange is to had this problem on 2 PCs, and no threads about it. (OK, i didn't start, either :-) But still, i would like to upgrade kdebase3 and have all running fine... Regards, PatrickM

You know, I can't say for sure I had the problem from the time I first upgraded to 10.1 or whether it just started recently. I just happened to notice it recently (I'm not always the most observant individual). So, maybe it started happening on my machine sometime after I first installed 10.1 instead of from the very beginning.

Well, I'm on kdebase3-3.5.1-69.15, so if that's the source of the problem, that would explain it. I'm not well versed in doing manual upgrades. I always just update through YaST, unless I'm installing some 3rd party software from a different source. I also worry about dependencies at this stage of the game (i. e., maybe there are other packages that I have that are dependent on having this latest kdebase3 version). I guess I'll just hang in there and hope that a future patch clears up the problem, unless someone knows of some specific tweak I can make manually that will fix the problem.

Hi, it's ok with YaST to manage the tweak. Try it if you wish, you can always upgrade if you feel so. Go to YaST-> Software Management In the "filter" choose "Search" Search for kdebase3. On the right pane, ensure "kdebase3" (the "single" one, not kdebase3-devel, etc) is highlighted. Below that pane, you'll have several tabs, one is "Versions". Click on it. Select the 3.5.1-69 (so, not the .15). Click "Accept". This procedure will ensure your worries about dependencies will go well :-) If the result is not the expected (the recovery of the screensavers), you can update to the .15 again the same way, or by one of your choice. There are other ways, though. You might want later to try "smart". HTH, Cheers, PatrickM

Downgrading to 3.5.1-69 brought back my screensaver, so it would appear that you were right -- the kdebase-3.5.1-69.15 patch must have been what caused the screensaver to stop working.
There are other ways, though. You might want later to try "smart".

I am using 10.0 and had problems with the KDE screen savers on my home system (not a laptop) using an ATI 9200 card.
I got mine to work by disabling the startup of the kdepowersave program. Also, in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file I removed the "DPMS" line from my monitor section . Here is also another possiblilty from another E-MAIL on the Fedora list (I have not tried this):
We think it's related to DPMS somehow. Hi, can't use this solution because of kdepowersave not running... wish to keep it :-)

just to say that i tried this Fedora hint, but did not work. The entry DPMS-dependant did not appear (the stanza is there, though), so i added the entry: DPMS-dependant=false After logoff/logon, it didn't work, still no screensaver. Anyway, if this worked, maybe it would be a hassle to do it for each profile in some cases. (Found nothing also in /etc/skel for future profiles, but might have checked badly) So until a fix is released, downgraded (*not* a solution) to the older version, and screensavers back again :-/ If this lack of screensaver with that kdebase3 version is confirmed, may be someone of us should report the bug. Cheers, PatrickM

LOL! That's exactly the opposite problem i have: since i upgraded, i can't get the screen save/lock to NOT turn on. i can't find a way to disable it, and having to type in my password every time my g/f and i switch sessions/desktops is really frustrating. Alternately, if i let the computer sit idle for some indeterminate amount of time, sometimes the screensaver/locker will kick in and sometimes not. Sometimes as little as 5 minutes, sometimes as long as a few hours. -- ----- stephan@s11n.net http://s11n.net "...pleasure is a grace and is not obedient to the commands of the will." -- Alan W.
