Re: [SLE] Install hangs with SuSE 8.1 when using a Promise Ultra100 controller

What drives have you got connected to your Promise ? On the Mandrake forum
they seem to be saying that certain drives (esp. probably Maxtor) are
causing the problem with Promise Ultra-100s (and Ultra-66s as in my case).
My mobo is an FIC VA-503+ with an AMD K6/2-500 and 384Mb RAM
I have the following devices on the on-board IDE controller:
Primary master: Maxtor 91741U4 - 17Gb
Primary slave: IBM-DHEA-38451 - 8Gb
Secondary master: Artec 40X CD-ROM
Secondary slave: OnStream DI-30 tape drive
I have the following drives on my Promise Ultra 66
Primary master: IBM DTLA-305040 - 40Gb
Primary slave: Seagate ST360020A - 60Gb
Secondary master: IBM-DTLA-307030 - 30Gb
Secondard slave: Maxtor 4G120J6 - 120Gb
I hasten to add everything works perfectly on SuSE 7.2 using kernel
2.4.16-4GB. I haven't got 8.0 (I only buy the point 1 or point 2
releases). It is almost certainly a kernel issue. There hasn't been a new
BIOS for the Ultra-66 for a very long time and I doubt there will ever be.
My work also has a SuSE 7.2 machine with a Promise Ultra-100 card and it
also works perfectly. So, any chance of a fixed kernel SuSE ?

On the offfending Ultra100 I have: Primary master: IBM-DTLA-307030 - 30GB Secondary master: IBM-DTLA-307030 - 30GB And this controller has worked with 7.1, 7,2, 7.3 (with both the original kernel and 2.4.16) and 8.0 I am starting wondering if installing 8.1 (in safe mode) and then downgrade the kernel to 2.4.18 (8.0) could work (it should certainly solve the promise problem, but maybe there would be other issues. Thanks, Ben I doubt that the CDROM, disks or controller is at fault - as it right now is works as expected with SuSE 8.0 (and used to do with 7.1, 7.2 and 7.3 :-) I did though do as you suggested: kept looking and found out that of the 3 boot parameters used for "Safe" boot only the ACPI=OFF was needed. Then the problem detecting the hde and hdg disks on the Promise controller disappeared. Before starting the install I'll just wait until tomorrow - my observation might ring a bell somewhere and before receiving the "DON'T DO THAT OR ...." messages after having found out the hard way I will just try to be patient :-) Anyway thanks for the replies sofar.
