System.map gets loaded by klogd. You can tell it what file name to look for with the -k option. Just change /etc/rc.d/syslog like this
startproc /usr/sbin/klogd -k "/boot/System.map$(/bin/uname -r)" \ -c $KERNEL_LOGLEVEL || return=$rc_failed
to make klogd look for System.mapKERNELVERSION (e.g. System.map2.4.0).
Thank You very much!!! The best answer I found on the net was to create symbolic links from the numbered System.mapsX.X.X to /boot System.map in boot.local. Your method is much cleaner.
