Yesterday I decided to make the move to reiserfs. I downloaded the patches, burned the CD and converted my 17 GB (except for the small /boot partition) drive to reiserfs. As a test, I wrote some stuff to the hard drive and then pressed the power button to turn the machine off without a proper shutdown. It took reiserfs exactly 10 seconds to re-apply the journal records and I was back in business. Very cool. With ext2 it would have taken about 20 minutes to check and fix the partition. Great job SuSE. I have been using ext3 for a few months already. Even though it is in alpha
stage, so far I did not encounter any problems. Best thing is I am able to
fall back on ext2 anytime.
May SuSE can create an additional series like 'MISC' and put ext3 package in
there for people to try out.
Cheers,
Wayne

Well you should thank Hans Reiser and his team of developers for this! :) But I must agree - ReiserFS is great. I have converted all my boxes (private and at work) to it and it runs flawlessly. Which of course leads us to the question. How much effort is it to convert a system? Is there a FAQ you could point us to? I did it the old fashioned way (I am not sure there is another way): backup, format, restore. Avi Nick Zentena wrote:

Sorry, the term "convert" was misleading. Unfortunately you have to reformat the partition with ReiserFS. There is no way of converting ext2 to ReiserFS on the fly yet. This is the nice thing about ext3 :) Bye, LenZ -- ------------------------------------------------------------------ Lenz Grimmer SuSE GmbH mailto:grimmer@suse.de Schanzaeckerstr. 10 http://www.suse.de/~grimmer 90443 Nuernberg, Germany -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

No. At least my 6.4 doesn't have it. Isn't ext3 still alpha? Ciao, Stefan -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
I'm trying to find out an easy way to find out what processes are using what ports?? Basically I loaded a programs and it keeps telling me that port is already in use, and I'm trying to find out what is using it. What do you thinkj of Reiserfs when it comes to database handling (e.g. Mysql or Sybase) do you reckon the security improvement will by far over compensate the performance hit or are there any chances of this file system to confuse the Sybase's recovery procedures (hence it would not be , in that particular case, worth the while) Thanks for your thoughts Didier Lenz Grimmer wrote:

To be honest - I have no idea. I guess there are not many people running large databases on ReiserFS right now. I have a small MySQL database on a ReiserFS partition. It runs flawlessly so far. But I would guess that the file system should not have any impact on the recovery procedures. As far as performance is concerned, there is still a need for more benchmarks.
