[SLE] Kmod...warning: /etc/modules.conf saved as /etc/modules.conf.rpmsave
Hi Updating packages aaa_base, cron & groff for SuSE 6.3 I got the above message about /etc/modules.conf Why does this happen? Also, Kmod replaces Kerneld, but the default system has Kerneld running, is it okay to disable in /etc/rc.config or is it best to keep it running so that dependencies of modules are kept upto date or should you use disable and use depmod? I am using the default Pentium kernel 2.2.13. Is there any good documentation about Kmod? I know how Kerneld worked on 2.0.36 kernel systems but I do not fully understand Kmod and the SuSE 6.3 manual has very little on it. Nothing bad will happen if both are running, usually. :) k> Is there any good documentation about Kmod? Some of the packages, when updating, will save a config file under *.rpmsave. It's a pain, but you just have to copy your customizations to that file, if any. -- Rafael Herrera -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

Updating packages aaa_base, cron & groff for SuSE 6.3 I got the above message about /etc/modules.conf
Why does this happen?
The update installed a new modules.conf and saved your old modules.conf as modules.conf.rpmsave. If you've changed your modules.conf, compare the two for any changes you might want also in the new modules.conf.
Also, Kmod replaces Kerneld, but the default system has Kerneld running,
Nope, it doesn't. At boot time the init script /sbin/init.d/boot checks if the kernel has support for kmod (/proc/sys/kernel/modprobe exists). If it does, kerneld will *not* be started, even if rc.config has START_KERNELD=yes.
Is there any good documentation about Kmod? I know how Kerneld worked on 2.0.36 kernel systems but I do not fully understand Kmod and the SuSE 6.3 manual has very little on it.
If you've installed the kernel sources, see
/usr/src/linux/Documentation/kmod.txt. Otherwise the contents of
Documentation is available somewhere under /usr/doc (forgot the exact
location).
