My first use of the list so be gentle... I just installed 8.0 and am trying to get basic network functions(telnet and ftp) working. I've attached the commands issued from an w2k machine's 'dos' window and the output from running inetd -d on the linux box. Any ideas on why I can ping but not telnet/ftp with no errors? Thanks, John McLean john.mclean@mindspring.com

I'll try :)

Just a thought - have you considered SSH/SCP as more secure options? You could use PuTTY (it's on the SuSE CDs under dosutils) on your Windows box.

I assumed that they were installed since Yast2 let me turn them on (ie the
entries were in inetd.conf).
Guess it would help to install the software first. Is that documented
anywhere?
This is my home (simple network) and I'm really only dabbling in linux so
that I can install Oracle and have a real test environment.
I'll tackle ssh after I get the basic stuff to work.

It's probably in the unofficial SuSE FAQ (http://susefaq.sf.net), but you just need to fire up YaST, and they'll both be in the 'n' series of packages

I installed the telnet server (using Yast2) and telnet now works but no luck
on ftp.
vsftpd was installed according to yast2 (marked with an i).
I also see the tcp wrappers marked with an i.
Is there any configuration that needs to be done? I wasn't sure if ftpusers,
ftpgroups etc had to be configured. The only file I have (default) is
ftpusers.

It's a good idea to configure it anyway ;-) The config file is /etc/vsftpd.conf And you may want to check that this line is not commented out of inetd.conf ftp stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd /usr/sbin/vsftpd If it's commented , just uncomment it, and run rcinetd reload -- James Ogley, Unix Systems Administrator, Pinnacle Insurance Plc james.ogley@pinnacle.co.uk www.pinnacle.co.uk +44 (0) 20 8731 3619 Using Free Software since 1994, running GNU/Linux (SuSE 8.0) Updated GNOME RPMs for SuSE Linux: www.usr-local-bin.org *********************************************************************** CONFIDENTIALITY. Thanks for all your help James. The vsftpd service was commented out in
inetd.conf.

Hi there, Are you using tcpd wrappers? Whats in your /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny? Check out "man 5 hosts_access" Hope this helps. Kind regards, Simon John McLean wrote:
