[opensuse] Linux 5.7 Released -- and it works too!
All, Somewhat old new, but the 5.7 kernel is now released and it works. Phoronix detailed the new features in: https://www.phoronix.com/vr.php?view=29069 And provides detailed articles on many of the individual new features: https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=search&q=Linux%205.7 and the best news (at least for me thus far) is that modules that get recompiled and generally break on new minor-version updates like VirtualBox, etc.. didn't (kudos to the VirtualBox folks for being ahead of the game this time) So far -- no surprises -- which is a good thing... -- David C. Umm, not quite. It does NOT work with nvidia G05 (440.82-lp151.25.1). Same thing happened when 5.6 kernel first arrived, nvidia had to reissue video drivers for their cards to work with it. Theoretical question: why can't kernel developers and nvidia 'share' before the fact, rather then having to patch after the fact...? Is there or will there be a patch to support NVIDIA GF106 [GeForce GTS 450] for 390.132 for the 5.7 kernel series? else I need to lock 5.6.xx. tks, -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri Photos: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/piwigo paka @ IRCnet freenode -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I'am not aware of a patch specific for 390.132. But the patch for 440.82 doesn't look specific for 440.82 because it only adds an include file to conftest.sh. So it might work for 390.132, too. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I extracted my patched for kernel 5.6 390.132.run file, changed to the extracted directory and ran patch -p1 -i ../kernel-5.7.patch but it failed with: patching file kernel/conftest.sh patch: **** malformed patch at line 16: this is beyond me, can someone advise. tks -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri Photos: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/piwigo paka @ IRCnet freenode -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Keep using 5.6.14? What's the rush? Until a kernel reaches x.y.2 or more, I don't bother allowing it to install. I still haven't allowed all mine to pass beyond 5.4.14. -- Evolution as taught in public schools is religion, not science. Team OS/2 ** Reg. Linux User #211409 ** a11y rocks!
