In 7.3 rcportmap stop works.
But next reboot will boot up portmap as usual. My solution is: do not install portmap. Yast2 says it will start portmap next time but it won't as it is not there. Another solution could be modifying the init script of portmap. Praise

himm have you consider setting it off with Yast2 run level editor it is possible just set the runlevels for that script or use chkconfig --del portmap or insserv -r portmap -- Togan Muftuoglu Unofficial SuSE FAQ Maintainer http://dinamizm.ath.cx

or use chkconfig --del portmap or insserv -r portmap
I just ran into this earlier this week, and `rcportmap stop;insserv -r portmap` has so far worked for me, but I haven't run yast2's runlevel editor for any reason since, so I can't say for sure it won't force it on again. If I encounter that, I'll probably go in and tack those two lines to the end of the SuSEconfig script... -- Rick Green "They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety." -Benjamin Franklin

I tried that, but yast2 insists that portmap is needed for _any_ custom configuration of inetd. Praise
