[SLE] 2 Questions about results of ifconfig ...
I am trying to set up a Linux box to be a proxy for my Internet connection via cable modem. I am using SuSE 6.4. Here is the output if I do an ifconfig. Two questions about it follows: eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 08:00:09:2B:7B:70 inet addr:24.166.xxx.xxx Bcast:255.255.255.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 UP BROADCAST NOTRAILERS RUNNING MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:6 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:6 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:100 Interrupt:3 Base address:0x300 DMA chan:5 eth1 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr C1:C1:C1:C1:C1:C1 inet addr:192.168.1.1 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:6 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:6 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:100 Interrupt:10 Base address:0x320 DMA chan:3 lo Link encap:Local Loopback inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0 UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:3924 Metric:1 RX packets:40 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:40 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 Question 1: The HWaddr of eth1 is not being read in correctly. The real numbers are 00:60:B0:1D:36:64. The DOS utility that came with the card to flash its memory (for address, DMA, IRQ, etc.) displayed the correct address (confirmed by looking at the numbers on the card myself). How can I get Linux to read the number correctly? Question 2: Other than the HWaddr of eth1, is there anything else that looks funny? I showed the ifconfig output to a friend and he thought that the RUNNING MULTICAST on eth1 looked fishy. Can someone tell me if this looks right for what I want to do, and if not, inform me on how I can correct it? Thanks in advance for your help. - Jesse === <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN"> <HEAD> <META http-equiv=Content-Type content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1"> <META content="MSHTML 5.50.4134.600" name=GENERATOR> <STYLE></STYLE> </HEAD> <BODY bgColor=#ffffff> <DIV><FONT size=2>I am trying to set up a Linux box to be a proxy for my Internet connection via cable modem.</FONT></DIV> <DIV><FONT size=2></FONT> </DIV> <DIV><FONT size=2>I am using SuSE 6.4.</FONT></DIV> <DIV><FONT size=2></FONT> </DIV> <DIV><FONT size=2>Here is the output if I do an ifconfig. It's quite easy to do. Save your Widoze Netscape profile(s) to a CDR and copy e.g ..\mail to /home/abdulah/nsmail. Copy/paste whatever is needed from C:\Program Files\Netscape\ Communicator\users\abdulah\prefs.js to /home/abdullah/.netscape/preferences.js and you are done. Remember to remove (delete) *.snm in the ../nsmail directory and subdirectories before opening Netscape. And of course you have to install the package nsfix.rpm. There are othe files that may be useful to port to SuSE: history.dat bookmarks.html etc. Yor will surely find out how to rename these to make use of them. Cheers, Niels Stenhøj. Don't know if this will help, but when I went from Win98 to Linux version of Netscape, I just copied my address book and mailbox files from my FAT32 to Linux, and it all worked flawlessly. I doubt the NT version would be any different. Umer Abdul Ahad wrote:
