I have just reinstalled my main server system, and have grave problems installing the printer. It is a HP 930C connected to the LAN through a D-Link DP-101 printserver (plugged onto the printer itself). I remember that my first SuSE Linux 7.3 installation on this system also gave me problems in this area, but somehow I got over them. Now I have struggled for a couple of days, and that is somewhat more than I expect to use for a "simple" job as setting up a printer. The printer and the printserver work, which can be confirmed by printing from other nodes on the LAN. Furthermore, when I try setting up the printer through YaST2 the test pages - both color and text - print out just fine. When I get around to use the printer after the setup, nothing happens. I have seen a patched apsfilter package which I have installed. Otherwise I have updated the system with YOU. I have backups from the previous installation, and I have tried moving all the relevant files to their libraries, but this plan didn't work either - same result. The problem is that I don't get any output from the printer. With some settings (adjusted from YaST2) the printer takes in a sheet of paper, but then the job dies. With other settings, the job dies instantly. When I do 'lpq' right after sending a job, I get a message about the job being removed. That is, the job got removed in the same moment it got issued. What should I be looking for? I have run out of ideas. Best regards, David List

Sorry - I am using LPRng, but I have tried with CUPS also, still setting up with YaST2. The results were the same. Best regards, David List

I never had success with LPRng (I'm sure the problem was with me, not the program), so I can't help you there. With my printer, which I am connecting to via SMB, Yast2 could not correctly set up. After setting it up with Yast2, I used Kups in KDE to correctly get the connection setup for SMB. Since your printer is also networked, I would suggest CUPS (assuming it has a driver for HP 930C), set it up initially in Yast2, then recheck in Kups and make any necessary corrections. Using kups worked instantly where YaST2 had utterly failed. Something to look into for the SuSE people. I am surely not the only one using the combination of an HP inkjet printer and a small printserver to make the printer reachable from different nodes on the LAN. Thank you for your answers.
