[opensuse] Re: [opensuse-announce] openSUSE 10.2 is done
We've mastered yesterday openSUSE 10.2 RC5 and declared it as goldmaster.
"RC5"??? I haven't been following 10.2 development very closely, and opensuse.org seems to show RC1 being the latest available to download. I can't even seem to find RC2-RC4. - BS -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

RC2-RC5 have been done internally, due to the rapid pace of development, it's been practically impossible to release those RCs to the public. Best, Christoph -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

The point is valid for ISO and Torrent distribution, however, not all RPM packages are updated, so factory should get it, does not it? -`J' -- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

That's correct. However, it takes some time for factory to spread over the mirrors. Best, Christoph -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Depends on the amount of time left between RC1 and Release Date as to how many other 'public' RC's we will see out here. Internally they do more RC's in the final weeks/days that we don't see out here. From what they've said in the past these are mostly cosmetic, last minute fixes that we hope don't impact us too much out here. Ummm... 10.3 will have some bugs, so you'll have to wait for 10.4. But 10.4 will... Software has bugs. You can never claim there are no bugs, only that you haven't found them yet. te I've been playing w/ the 10.2 RC and most of my problems have to do w/ the insistence on no nongpl software. ( Barring the stuff Novell has licenses for ) I go to packman, find, say, lame for my architecture.. which OS is a tad behind on .. and install like cake, but not ONE peice of software will recognize it's there. At leasted the boxed set shouldn't do that or what in hell is all the sweat going on at Packman going for anyway??? they must have a couple of new lakes or rivers, given the work they have done. I updated all the required codecs for all kinds of items. Mainly Audio/Video things . but you would have to do that sooner or later. IF you want to get work done that doesn't include A/V , and you can play this is a sweet music, CDs, radio, oggs, and MP3s right off the install w/ o doing anything other than the original installation , you can. Just not w/ many of the programs you expect to use.For instance, all the music players will play Oggs ( better sound for the same file size BTW) but Real audio is the only one that will play mp3s . This is a sweet install and an even better looking desktop. Network management is easier, for casual users, and lots of little tweaks and tucks have been put into things.. I don't even need to have any sort of Word Proc. My stuff is usually happy on kedit. But, OO looks pretty enough , as someone else commented, to whistle at. I just don't have any use for it.. Those are my most annoying bugs. There are the usual annoyances at things not being where you think they should be.but largely, unless you have weird hardware, or underused , as 64bit seems to be , so far in the world. You won't find anything that should keep you from getting it. All new versions of things have bugs and snafus, thing w/ linux and especially Suse linux, is they get fixed quick! In fact Linux-Magazine has a special going if you make a $9 & change subscription trial now they will sent you two full dvds of 10.2 you won't do better than that for a test. But , I found the 10.1 didn't have 64 bit architecture on it.. so be warned :) 2dvds should cover just about everything tho. -- j -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I dont want to come here and take the candy from your hands, but thats whats happens with any release... Some bugs are still there. If its software, it has a bug. You misunderstood me. This is the general policy with each release. A perfect bugfree distribution will be ideal. There are two periods: * Before the goldmaster you fix all the bugs with priority on the critical ones and try to not break stuff. The earlier you report , the better is the chance to get it fixed. * after the goldmaster you fix only a few bugs via online update. The majority of the fixes will go into the next release... 10.3 will introduce its own share of new bugs - and new enhancements and fixes. I consider 10.2 a great distribution. My message was to tell people that we a) do fix some of the existing bugs via online update b) will not fix all bugs Hope this clarifies it, Andreas - aka someone at SUSE ;-) -- Andreas Jaeger, aj@suse.de, http://www.suse.de/~aj/ SUSE Linux Products GmbH, Maxfeldstr. 5, 90409 Nürnberg, Germany GPG fingerprint = 93A3 365E CE47 B889 DF7F FED1 389A 563C C272 A126

Well, in the short run (before chirstmas - aledgedly) ye shall have a box. A green one op a blue one, - your choice. Realistically, what's the difference between a downloaded gold master an a boxed master? Ultimatly, with the increase in bandwidth, I suspect the day of the "boxed anything" is going away. Down load a cd's worth of stuff and install from that (which Gentoo has done for years as the default way of installing, but other distros support as well). Chaseing all over is an excellent application of computers, and the net. They do it well. If ZMD keeps getting better I don't see the chaseing as the big problem. That means the Distros need a new way to make money. Might be paying customers will get faster servers, or earlier access, or even actual tech support. I could see a distro supplying only initial releases and security patches to the general public, and inplace upgrades to paying customers, so that you don't have to wait for the next release to get something new/cool. I can reach out from this chair and touch 4 boxed sets, and walk across the room to 3 more. I don't mind paying for them. But I don't mind paying a different way either. I don't think SuSE's making money on selling hard boxes. At best, it just balances. Just guessing. Perhaps a new business model is called for. So stop selling expensive boxes, just sell a small envelope with a DVD and a large poster, some stickers and whatever in, together with a thin "how to get started right now" manual. I want manuals too. But I don't want the ordinary "simple" manual, "getting started" (whatever) that's usually in the box. I want a real thick brick filled with hi-tech details and how-tos. That's too expensive to print, of course. So, as a paying user, let me have the envelope and a voucher with a code on, to let me download/on-line read the real thick tech manual. I have seen news stand magazines that have been just this. A SUSE distro and a magazine to get you started. They are often on the news stands here when a new release is out. I do not know who actually releases them. It could be one of the European Linux mags that release a special item. These happen occasionally for various distros. Either that or like Redhat let a book publisher handle all the manuals. Or with a permission goto the local copy shop and have them produce it for you from a PDF.
