I am currently running suse 7.3 on a compaq pressario 1700 xl 569..I can't make advanced power management to work on my laptop..I have compiled a kernel with apm enabled and have installed the apmd daemon...Nevertheless when asked, the kernel I use (along with the orgiginal suse one) does not seem to have apm enabled/integrated into it ...I have read the man pages but cannot figure out why I cannot use apm..Any advice would be appreciated
Do you have the apmd enabled in rc.config? If not, then apmd
will not load. You can edit this in YaST or with vi. If you
edit with vi, make sure to run SuSEConfig after to set
everything up.
You should have two key processes running when apm is enabled.
kapm-idled (the kernel apm support)
apmd (the apm daemon)
Good luck,
Keith

Dear keith ,
Thanks for your advice.I have enabled START_APMD to yes in the rc config
and the daemon tries to initialise during bootup but I get an 'apm
kernel not enabled' during bootup. Also I appear to be missing an apm
mime when doing 'cat /proc/apm)
Both kernels I am using, the homemade and the suse one had apm enabled
so I am at a loss again..Maybe I should have installed something else as
well?

Hmm, I'm using the stock kernel and it is working for me. Try
apm=yes at boot to try to force the kernel to enable apm
support. I'm not sure why it would fail otherwise.
