[opensuse] Fw: Sporadic X Server crash on logout
Hello all, We've got a problem with SuSE-10.2. A user keeps complaining about X not being started every now and then in the morning. It turned out that there seems to be a logout - problem of some kind, /var/log/messages shows something like Jun 13 17:01:37 COMPUTERNAME kdm[4674]: X server for display :1 terminated unexpectedly Jun 13 17:01:37 COMPUTERNAME kdm[4674]: Unable to fire up local display :1; disabling. Jun 13 17:01:37 COMPUTERNAME gconfd (username-14159): Signal 15 erhalten, ordungsgemäÃes Herunterfahren Jun 13 17:01:37 COMPUTERNAME gconfd (username-14159): Beenden where "username" is the replacement of the user that keeps complaining. He uses KDE, and he assures that all he does at the times in question is to logout from KDE. Other users have the gconfd process runing as well, but none of them has the same problem, furthermore, none of the other users has the "Got Signal 15" - gconfd - message in his /var/log/messages. To summarize the problem: - The user works on SuSE 10.2 with a 2.6.18.8-0.9-default - Kernel, the system is up-to-date- - He logs out from KDE in the evening - Every now and then the X Server crashes and leaves the above messages in /var/log/messages - Back to office next morning the user calls us, we log on to his computer and easily restart his X with rckdm restart. Any Ideas? The computer runs with fglrx drivers and a ATI PCI Express card. We have several of those computers up and running with SuSE 10.2, but the problem is unique. Sorry, I am not quite sure what to make of it. Would it be possible to run rsync in dry-run mode to see what files are different between that computer and another one of the ATI computers? In other words, try to find out what files are different between the broken and working computers. And then compare those files one by one. That is the best advice I can give.
