Good evening, I've been running 9.1 for about 6 months now, after learning Linux on Fedora Core. I'm far from what anyone in their right mind would call accomplished, however. I normally check for, and apply, security updates on a daily basis. I've noticed over the past month or so that just the process of checking for updates via YOU has grown to about 10 minutes time. Today I logged nearly 3MB of data transfer just for the check. I ended up only needing about 80K of actually program updates. What actually takes place here? What is being downloaded? I have YOU set to delete updates from disk after they've been applied. Are there cache files that need cleaning? Is there an index that needs rebuilding? Are there better, finer grained solutions than YOU? Thanks in advance, John -- Thanks to spin, we can incarcerate our citizens at the rate of 1200 per week...and still live in the land of the free.

You mean when it says it's checking for updates before you see the list? 3MB seems a bit much - just tried it and took < .5MB

It downloads a description of each update available and compares it to the list of installed packages and previous updates - these are small text files, one for each possible update.

NO - it keeps a record of what has been updated, but only the descriptions. If you delete these YOU won't know what's been updated already. Which server are you using? some can be very slow and others faster. Dylan

Thanks in advance, John

Please clarify this. Is it downloading a description of EVERY available update, or only a description of updates that I need. Your wording seems to point to the first.
Which server are you using? some can be very slow and others faster. ftp://ftp-linux.cc.gatech.edu/pub/suse/suse/ It's the one I've had the best luck with for my area.
Thanks, John

The first - but each file is only around 2 - 5k
Which server are you using? some can be very slow and others faster.
ftp://ftp-linux.cc.gatech.edu/pub/suse/suse/
This server seems slow from here
It's the one I've had the best luck with for my area.
Thanks, John
