[opensuse] CUPS setup question
hi folks, One of my printers is an older HP LaserJet 4L attached via epp port to one of my Suse e-boxes. This printer is shared on the network. Several of us print to this printer across the network using CUPS. The other client machines are also Suse e-boxes, 10.0. All of this printing works fine... here is the question: Does every machine *need* to define the printer driver, or just the host machine where the printer is physically attached? And the second related question is this... (for the moment all machines are defining the print driver) which driver actually formats the text for the printer... the driver on the client machine CUPS server, or the driver on the host machine CUPS server? I am wondering if I should call the HP LJ4L a "raw" printer on the client machine and only have the driver configured on the host machine where the printer physically is attached. Thanks. Ps... The good news is that since I have been using CUPS on Suse I have not had to struggle with my printers... they just work... but, I would like to understand a little better *how* they are working. I am wondering if I should call the HP LJ4L a "raw" printer on the client machine and only have the driver configured on the host machine where the printer physically is attached. By "driver" do you mean the .ppd definition file? One is created for every printer you define, be it local or remote. AFAICT, the only difference between a local printer and a remote IPP-accessed printer is in the URI (written into /etc/cups/printers.conf), though the detail
