Recently someone was asking about compatible organizers. I have a question on the other side. What (Linux, of course) desktop software compatible with the Palm organizers do you recommend? I've noticed that there are usually quite a few alternatives for anything in Linux. Which one(s) do you use? -- Satterwhite's Observation #2: In any situation in which theory conflicts with reality, reality wins every time.

It depends what you want to do :-) I'm a Gnome user, so I use JPilot (gtk-based) to sync my PalmOS device. This provides everything you're likely to need in the way of backups as well as basic desktop functionality (ability to view and change appointments, addresses, memos etc.). However, if you need to work fully on the desktop with the data as well, the Evolution is probably better (but much bigger). I use kde but I also use jpilot. I don't know if the appropriate gtk libraries came with my distro or my install of jpilot or what, but it works very nicely. Rumor has it that k-pilot is a little broken and earlier versions seemed to be so for me. My main use for jpilot is to download code that I write for a Palm (and hot sync) so I cannot say much about all of the other features that exist in jpilot. -- Tony Alfrey tonyalfrey@earthlink.net "I'd Rather Be Sailing"

I have been using jpilot with KDE since SuSE 7.3 It shouldn't be any issues. Jason

Although I don't use my pilot much anymore, count me as a jpilot user as well. Now if I could only synch with Mozilla's address book and calendar I'd have a use for my Palm again. -- John LeMay KC2KTH Senior Enterprise Consultant NJMC | http://www.njmc.com | Phone 732-557-4848 Specializing in Microsoft and Unix based solutions

You also need pilot-link, which is the engine that actually does the sync. One warning is that the versions on the SuSE 8.1 CD won't work with some of the newer Palms, and you may need to upgrade both pilot-link and jpilot. Here is the URL for jpilot: http://www.jpilot.org/
