I'm going to be building a computer and installing S.U.S.E. 5.2 on it. Does it make any difference on what monitor I use, as long as the video card is supported? Plan to invest in a decent monitor that supports 1024x768 / 1280x1024 @ >= 75Hz refresh rate if you want to use X. I have seen people skimp on monitors and regret it later. Also, suggest buying it retail after getting a chance to see how it performs. If for some reason you don't like it, exchange is easier [shipping charges can be significant with insurance :(] Choose the one that your eyes feel most comfortable with and do not get carried away with tech. specs. Yes... the combination of the two is essential to the overall performance of the Xserver you will be running... So video cards are slow and don't have many fancy features to make a nice Xenviroment work easily (Older Tridents), Other video cards (ATI's are wonderful) can make any monitor do wonderful things... I own a Trident 9685 providia with 4megs of ram, and since they've combined the SuSE Trident Xserver withe the SVGA Xserver, I can get 1024x768 with a 16 bit color depth on my 15" CTX 1562GM. The best setup I've witnessed personally was a RIVA128 (4 megs) running 1280x1024 at 32 bit color depth (I think) on a 17" MAG (or Viewsonic) and it had extra resolution (modes) to spare... I was jealous... The scrolling was the smoothest I've seen, ever! I wished I could have seen what mpeg looked like... I have a cheap Trident 9680 or 85 with 1 Meg of ram, and I am interested in this add-on or combined deal that you mention, but I am not familiar with it. Could your explain it more. I have been thinking of upgrading to an ATI.

Now this above sounds like what I want, but I never heard of a RIVA128 and I am planing on getting a 17" Viewsonic, could you advise me on this board also? Many thanks for your effort.

The RIVA128 is a chip that is in some of the Diamond Cards and the Voodoo card I believe, and the Xserver for is really fast (it's a really fast card, I believe it's dac goes to 230). If I could afford it, I would buy that one with 8megs and TV ports. ATI has been on of the forerunners in releasing specs to make great Xservers for their cards. I believe they are the most supported out of the any brand (feature wise) with xfree86, but I believe the RIVA128 is the fastest, I could be wrong too, I don't know what is new. I believe that most of the new well known brand monitors have a really wide sync range for Horizontal and Vertical frequencies. I am happy with my Trident Providia, even though the drivers in Windows or xfree86 support all of it's features, I trust someday they will. Not even close. The riva is made by nvidia. Voodoo, voodoo rush, and voodoo2 cards are made by 3dfx. The voodoo and voodoo2 are 3d only cards, they do not do 2d at all, and they only do fullscreen 3d, not in a window. 3dfx voodoo and voodoo2 cards outperform any other card in 3d performance by a factor of 4, but this will soon change as other card makers rush to play catch up. Voodoo and voodoo2 cards support microsoft's directX, a subset of sgi's OpenGL, and their own proprietary api, Glide. World Leader Pretend wrote:

Riva128 is fastest, I do believe. However, it is NOT the chip in the Voodoo card, but rather is that chip's greatest rival. The chip in the Voodoo cards is not a "chip" but a chipset called the Voodoo chipset, made by 3dfx. It is a 3D only solution, and I'm not aware that it is supported under Linux. Riva128 is a 2D/3D solution, but I believe only its 2D functions are supported at this time.

nvidia makes the riva128 board, and overall it is a nice card. Visual quality in 3d applications is somewhat poor compared to 3dfx and rendition. Matrox makes, hands down, the nicest 2d board money can buy. If you are concerned with 3d, then chances are you already have a 3dfx voodoo card, so for 2d I would recommend matrox. It would be worth waiting a month to get the new matrox g200, which hasn't hit the market yet but will be here soon. -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
