[opensuse] Networked printer - can accept jobs from Linux laptop but not a Windows 7 laptop
Hi everyone, I'm having a slightly odd problem; it concerns a networked printer. My desktop computer, running OpenSUSE 12.1 is acting as a print server to a HP Laserjet 1010; I can print to it from my laptop (running Arch Linux) over wireless without any problems, yet my mum, who is running Windows 7) on her laptop can't send print jobs to it at all. It worked with no problems when I first installed OpenSUSE 12.1 about a week ago - prior to that, I've had many different flavours of Linux (and FreeBSD) installed on the desktop PC, and I've never had any problems with printing. I just tried starting the desktop PC up with an old Ubuntu live CD in the drive and it accepted and printed a document over the network from the Windows laptop, which means that it must be a problem with my OpenSUSE configuration. I've checked the printer settings in YAST and had a look at the CUPS web front end and everything appears to be in order. Is there something blindingly obvious that I'm missing? Thanks, best regards, David -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I had a similar problem at work, but it only affected printing from Windows 7 to a Samsung printer. XP worked fine with it and other printers were OK with Windows 7. There was something peculiar about using that only that printer with W7. I never did find the cause. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
How are you printing to it? I recommend in Windows you set it up as an IPP printer, and provide the CUPS URL of the printer (e.g.: http://system.enterprise.local:631/printers/Lexmark2) , and then use a standard PostScript driver like HP LaserJet 5P. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I assume your wireless network runs o.k. - e.g. the Windows 7 client can at least "ping" the OpenSUSE 12.1 server and so on... There must be a difference how the Arch Linux client sends a print job to the OpenSUSE 12.1 server compared to how the Windows 7 client sends a print job to the OpenSUSE 12.1 server. The usual difference is that Linux clients send print jobs via the IPP protocol which is the native CUPS communication protocol while Windows clients send print jobs via the native Windows protocol which is SMB. Therefore on the Linux server Samba must run which accepts print jobs via the SMB protocol from Windows clients. See http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Printing_from_Windows_to_Linux Therefore I assume something related to Samba makes the difference why the Windows 7 client cannot send a print job to the Linux server. Perhaps you run a firewall on the Linux server which blocks the ports for Samba on the Linux server?
