I was doing some maintenance on my home network and logged out of my normal user, then did a reboot. After the reboot, I go up to init 3 (which is normal on this box). After logging in as that user, startx blanks the screen for a few seconds then pops back to the command line. There are no warnings or errors displayed or in any log files that I've checked.
If I login as root and do "init 5", I get the graphical login screen. Trying to login as my normal user pops right back to that screen too.
I can login as other users.
Has anyone seen this before?
Can you log in this user at the command line? If so, go to runlevel 5 and try to log in this user using a different window manager. If these are all local users and only 1 doesn't log in correctly, then it sounds like the window configuration file for that user got corrupted somehow.

I did try gnome as well as KDE. I can log in at the command line, it's just "startx" that fails and returns me to the command line, with no errors shown. Other users work fine. Thanks, Jim

Did you look for clues in /var/log/XFree86.0.log or /var/log/Xorg.0.log? Jeff

Just a stab in the dark, check the permissions in your home directory. All files should be owned by you. It's possible, that startx is trying to write something and is unable to. This includes hidden files (eg dotfiles) as well.
