Hi, I've just built my Linux server (quad Pentium Pro 200) with SuSE Linux 8 and in KDE it ... well ... pauses! It's not particularly fast anyway and that i accept but when I click anything it doew nothing until I do something else e.g. click again or move the mouse out of focus. Any ideas? James C. Strange - I have an old Olivetti Netstrada 7000 (quad PPRO 200 with 256Mb RAM and 6 x 4.3Gb SCSI drives and a DDS2 tape), and SuSE 8.0 SCREAMS on it.... You havae to use a decent video card, though... Jon P.S. Anyone in Australia want to buy a presently-not-being-used quad PPRO server ? $600....:-) => -----Original Message----- => From: James.Rocks@equant.com [mailto:James.Rocks@equant.com] => Sent: Wednesday, 4 December 2002 9:46 PM => To: suse-linux-e@suse.com => Subject: [SLE] Strange Pausing! => => => Hi, => => I've just built my Linux server (quad Pentium Pro 200) with => SuSE Linux 8 and in KDE it ... well ... pauses!

No, I have no ideas. But I would think thats a pretty small machine to be running KDE on. And you mentioned elsewhere that you have a 8Mb video card, which probably doesn't help. If you are running a server, and are not totally attached to KDE (fine tho it is), you may want to look into WindowMaker, Xfce or Blackbox. All of which put far less load on the server. WHAT? Read it again. He has FOUR PP200 CPUs in the box. That ought to be quite a bit faster than my box with a single Celeron 333, which runs KDE nicely.

No, but that should not be much of a problem, unless the driver for it is buggy.

IceWM is also nice and fast. Since it is a server, I would suggest getting rid of X and admin the box over webmin instead. Regards Ole

I don't think the cpu speed is the bottle neck there. The amount of memory in the box makes a huge difference. A single 200 with 512MB should be quite usable. A 200 with 64MB I'd be impressed if KDE could do anything useful at all.
