[opensuse] flash video download?
Can anyone tell me how to download a flash video? I have purchased an online course, and the streaming videos are all in flash. The problem is, sometimes I traveland go to places where I have no internet access, or go to places where I might have it but the bandwidth is very small. Watching a streaming video with low bandwidth can turn a 20 minute video into an hour and a half, and make it hard to follow as there are so many frequent pauses. I would like to download the videos in advance while I am at home with high bandwidth and then have them on my hard drive to watch them while travelling. -- George Olson Box #1: 13.1 | KDE 4.11 | AMD Phenom IIX4 | 64 | ATI Radeon HD 3300 | 16GB Box #2: 13.1 | KDE 4.11 | AMD Athlon X3 | 64 | nVidia C61 GeForce 7025 | 4GB Laptop: 13.1 | KDE 4.11 | Core i7-2620M | 64 | Intel HD Graphics 3000 | 8GB -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Thanks for that. I just reviewed the license for the course, and even though it doesn't say specifically that we should not download, I think the intent is that the videos are only meant to be watched on-line. So I think I willnot go to the effort to download the videos. So nevermind. -- George Olson Box #1: 13.1 | KDE 4.11 | AMD Phenom IIX4 | 64 | ATI Radeon HD 3300 | 16GB Box #2: 13.1 | KDE 4.11 | AMD Athlon X3 | 64 | nVidia C61 GeForce 7025 | 4GB Laptop: 13.1 | KDE 4.11 | Core i7-2620M | 64 | Intel HD Graphics 3000 | 8GB -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Thanks everyone for those suggestions. I had actually googled it before but had not gotten the link to flashvideodownloader.org, and that is the one that seems to work best. Even if I don't end up using it to download my course lectures, it is good to have for other flash videos. I might mention one thing - one of the flash videos that I have tried to download before uses a service called "ooyala" or something like that. Apparently it breaks the video up into multiple segments and then puts it back together while you are streaming it. So the only way I found to get this video is to stream it and use a screen recorder to capture the video if I want to save it for offline viewing. Of course this is all just for personal use and convenience, but it really does help for those of us that are living in areas with low bandwidth, as I can save the video and watch it later. -- George Olson Box #1: 13.1 | KDE 4.11 | AMD Phenom IIX4 | 64 | ATI Radeon HD 3300 | 16GB Box #2: 13.1 | KDE 4.11 | AMD Athlon X3 | 64 | nVidia C61 GeForce 7025 | 4GB Laptop: 13.1 | KDE 4.11 | Core i7-2620M | 64 | Intel HD Graphics 3000 | 8GB -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I use "Flash Video Downloader" (flashvideodownloader.org), works on many places. But I know of at least a site using flash that you can not even watch it on line with Firefox, you have to use the proprietary Chrome browser instead. I use the donwloader because simply online viewing does not work with the slow adsl I have (not even pausing the video to allow it to fill the buffer). Sometimes I had to find the video on those peer to peer networks... -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 13.1 x86_64 "Bottle" at Telcontar)

If you are using Firefox, like I do, then use the Add-on for it called DownloadHelper. However, not all sites allow their videos to be downloaded - including YouTube where you are able to download most videos but not all. Just for info: you can start to view a video then activate DownloadHelper but then PAUSE the viewing and get on with doing something else while DownloadHelper continues to save the video to HDD in the baqckground. If you use Firefox browser you could use several video downloader plugins. One of them able to handle formats and converters is 'video downloadhelper 4.9.21'. http://paste.opensuse.org/61588727 To instal whatever you choose just go to " Tools->Add-Ons-> Type in video downloader and it will list a few options. Then, click on 'Install' and restart your Firefox browser. Voilá, you can start downloading your videos on your favorite format. Beware of licensing to download video offline.
