I am still struggling to get my little private network working and to understand my problems I have the following question. My server (with 2 ethernet cards)is connected to the ISP with a fixed IP# and name "stremen.xs4all.nl" to the internet world. My workstation uses a private lan (192.168.1.x) and is named namely "corrente" in /etc/hosts etc files. The question is, can I name my private domain as I like it, e.g, can I call my workstation "corrente.stroom.net", and my server (as seen from corrente) "stremen-int.stroom.net"? Or do I have to give all my workstations (only 1:-) names which relate to "stremen.xs4all.nl". And thus my workstation would become something like "corrente.stremen.xs4all.nl"? This question is relevant to me, because I am using the first option at present, and it does not work: I cannot send mail from "charles@stremen.xxxx" to "charles@corrente.xxxx", where xxxx is any form of "stroom" or "stroom.net" etc. Charles Stroom email: charles@stremen.xs4all.nl url: http://www.xs4all.nl/~stremen
it seems you want to have a private and a public(internet) mail exchangers. you will need at least one private DNS for stroom.net domain (where you will define who is the mail exchanger (MX) for that domain) and a public DNS (already supplied by your ISP) for xs4all.nl domain. You will need also to define your MTA for stroom.net. it can relay mail from your private network to xs4all.nl. If you want stremen.xs4all.nl to relay mail to stroom.net from internet, you will have to define stremen.xs4all.nl as MX for, say, corrente.stremen.xs4all.nl, and defines rules at stremen.xs4all.nl's MTA. => Charles Stroom wrote: => I am still struggling to get my little private network working and => to understand my problems I have the following question. => My server (with 2 ethernet cards)is connected to the ISP with a fixed => IP# and name "stremen.xs4all.nl" to the internet world.
