[SLE] OK Let's start a "gosh darn it" list for V7
Every time a new releas of SuSE comes out we enevitably find a few nasty "features". Well I just go my SuSE 7, and I've hit my share of interesting "features". I did a Tabular Rassa (sp) with the reiser fs, and an "almost everything." Considdering I put about 6 Gig on this HD, I guess I sould be impressed with the number of things that went right. I then applied all the latest patched from the FTP server, to include the XF86-4.0.1. We as humans tend to focus on the things that go wrong, espescially if we don't know how to fix them. With that said, here goes: A) ALSA failed B) Netscape crashed every time I put the cursor in the location field and hit the any key. C) Apache won't serve - many problems D) no way - that I found - to set my mouse to Emulate3Buttons in Yast 1 or 2, or SaX2 E) jpegs were broken Alsa found my soundcard, but screwed up the configuration. 1) it said my CD-ROM was disabled - using yast2 2) It was able to generate sound when setting up the volume 3) when I restarted the system I got these messages: "Sep 15 22:45:16 linux kernel: isapnp: Card 'AZT1008 PnP SOUND DEVICE' Sep 15 22:45:16 linux kernel: isapnp: 1 Plug & Play card detected total Sep 15 22:45:16 linux kernel: snd: card-azt2320.c: MPU-401 isapnp configure failure Sep 15 22:45:17 linux modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module snd-card-1 Sep 15 22:45:17 linux modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module snd-card-1 Sep 15 22:45:17 linux modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module snd-card-2" 4) I removed everything Alsa related and installed trusty old oss from 4front. 5) Currently rockin' out to early Jethro Tull :-) Netscape crashed when attmpting to enter a URL. 1)removed Netscape rpm 2) intalled Netscape form home.netscape.com 3) I haven't tested it. but I expect none of my plugnins work. 4) believe these problems arise from the XF86 upgrad No way to Emulate3Buttons except by hand. 1) I forgot to back up my old XF86Config. 2) ran xf86config and chose the emulate 3 buttons option 3) saved to the current directory - answered 'no' to save to /etc/X11 and 'no' to save to /usr/X11R6/bin, then 'yes' to save in this directory. 4) copied the relevant line from the new XF86Config - Option "Emulate3Buttons" to the /etc/X11/XF86Config 5) all is well Apache starts but won't serve - telnet localhost 80 ... connection refused - ps shows httpd: 1) still working on this one 2) It seems as if there are multiple problems with this. Hi Steven et al! I gave up. In SuSE 6.3, I had a very hard time time to get my Woodoo 3000 AGP to work properly. In 7.0 it's even worse. I can't select 1024x768 despite trying Yast2, sax and sax2. I erased all of it and reinstalled 6.4 and now I'm selecting what I need in small chuncks from the 7.0 DVD-ROM. The books, however, are nice. Hi everybody, well this always happens on updates. ;-/ I've got no problems on netscape -just using it- (Oh, yes, I had to find that sript calling netscape to turn that crappy german version off, but that's not SuSE related) and Alsa works perfect with my SB live. I didn't get sendmail to work, I get "550 connection refused" if I try to do anything with it i.e. telneting to port 25 on localhost. The version from 6.4 that I fell back to works still nice. The support request is out. I couldn't print from the shell "man man|lpr" as long as it's text. Everything else works. Support hinted to reinstall the printing system (lpr, a2ps, apsfilter, ghostscript) that didn't solve it (yet). Currently I am using all the new stuff but the old apsfilter from 6.4 and everything is fine. Final words from support expected on monday. ;-) Third, I broke my scanner. Scanning looked better than with 6.4, when I made the "final" scan, I had left the room and after recognising what the sound meant I heared from the distance it was to late. I repaired it, nice work I do not want to do a second time -but that's a known risk with mustek's-. I found the line in the mustek.c source that holds the x-max value changed it and recompiled sane, but do not know which files to replace. That's out to support as well. I do not blame SuSE for this, it's a risk that we have until we get drivers from the original manufactors. Juergen Niels Stenhøj wrote:

Niels, If you install the XF86-3.x you should be able to use you old XF86Config with v7. It looks as though both servers shipped with v7. You may also want to attempt using xf86config. It's not all *that* bad. I had to use it at home to get my ATI Rage128 to setup with 6.4 and XF86-4.0.1. One helpful bit of info is that you can keep going if you miss your video card in the list, it wraps back to #1 eventually. I guess it really depends on how much *fun* you are willing to put up with. If I though about this realistically, I would probably not be doing this right now. Perhaps one day I will gain a clue as to how to work with this stuff. Unix/Linux is a huge, and growing world. It cries out for better configuration methods. There is another issue. Yast can only write LiLo to /dev/hda or /dev/sda. I use a Promise Ultra66 card by which the HD is assigned to /dev/hde. I clearly see the idea, but it's wrong. This is certainly more Winblows than Winblows itself. In DOS you can select frely where to assign your bootloader. Many choose to unmount a HD in the BIOS menu to allow another system to boot. If for good reason you have chosen to run Linux from /dev/hdb by setting the primary master to 'none' you are lost because of yast's inability to write LiLo to the MBR of /dev/hdb If anyone knows a workaround to write LiLo to /dev/hde, I'll be gratefull. Thanks in advance. On console two you'll find a shell during the installation. Use CTRL+ALT+F2 from yast2. When all packages have been installed you can do a 'chroot /mnt' and you're in the newly installed system. Edit /etc/lilo.conf and run 'lilo'. Done. Actually, you may want to configure lilo.conf with yast2 anyway, and then edit it afterwards for 'hde'. -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq

So, the next logical question is, "why does SuSE provide the option to install 'almost everything'? Not to be a PITA, Ben, and i'm a big fan of SuSE's work, but this is one of those things that makes one wonder if new users are being set up to screw up. There will be new users who are eager to check out *everything* that SuSE has to offer, and all at the same time. Experience teaches us to do differently, but there are no up front cautions against installing everything all at once. Might be a good idea? There are cautions included with certain pieces of software... As for the rest of 7.0, i'm still waiting for the FTP version, as i had to spring for 6.4 quite recently....and i won't go into the quality of the media, but the software upgrades seemed promising enough. 8) anyway... Of course you can. IN sax2, do an Expert configuration, the 'Easy' one won't show the dialog. In the mouse screen go to 'Expert' and do what you have to do.
d) /usr/lib/JSDK2.0 is an empty directory. I don't believe the jsdk is in the SuSE distribution, unless it is part of JDK 1.3.

These messages tell you that you've failed to configure ALSA correctly, namely that there are no alias entries for snd-card-?. Just disable OSS again, remove all ALSA related entries from /etc/modules.conf and configure ALSA again, either via alsaconf or YaST2. I'll bet it will run.
Netscape crashed when attmpting to enter a URL.
There are a number of bugs in Netscape that we try to work around with the help of a wrapper script, a library (libnspipe.so) and modified default preferences. In this case, AFAIR, one of the fixes isn't needed for the new Xlib but there's currently no way to determine the version at runtime. The current 'fix' is to call netscape directly, i.e. as '/opt/netscape/netscape'.
Jpegs were broken. 1) this may have been due to my having installed the KDE2-Beta5 rpms and then alowing Yast to put qtaddon back.
If you're using betas, you're supposed to know what you're doing. You can't
blame that on SuSE, can you?
