With the same argument, you are accepting bloated, incompatible M$ word files, Office97 and so on! Or are you? While I do not care about what 2 consenting adults/computers/email programs do to each other, I DO prefer good old ASCII. Yes, my mail program does cooperate with browsers to show me the crap on request, but using HTML as a default (especially when no info is in there that could not be conveyed by ASCII) is as useful as driving a 10-ton truck all the time, no matter if you are moving or just sightseeing. That's a pretty inconvenient way to do things, a Window'ish way, if you ask me! Html email sucks and is an inconvenience to others. People who send html to mailing lists are either clueless or selfish. Most of my mail browsing is done in netscape, both in linux and win95, but about 1/3 of the time I take my mail at the console, and I'm sure I'm not the only unix user out here that enjoys the simple elegance of running from the command line. I get a mailing list of game developer .plan files, and it amazes me how cs types can be so clueless about netiquette because so many of the posts are in html. It is a testament to how windows breeds ignorance, as well as to the crappy nature of that lists' nt majordomo server (the list sends out only ascii, so all the posts look like viewing html with vi :P). end rant :)

hmm, for the most part, about the same method I used to create my text signature, except that was done with vi I believe, (or the internal editor for midnight commander). BTW, I did get that email also, complete with the image, but when I reread the message, the message had disappeared:-( That was why I was wondering how you got the image.

hehe, actually, there have been occasions when I did use pine to read some of my mail and found myself in a message that contained html and/or images. All pine did was to tell me to use v/s to save the file so it could be viewed with an external viewer. But I guess that there are mail readers that aren't even that advanced:-) Though for the most part when I do reply or write to the "list" I generally try to send it in plain text as I have seen a few negative posts about sending html messages into the list:-( Thanx, I'll save this message (and forward it to myself so I can read it the next time I'm on the linux box:-) (My better half is using it now to play bingo or whatever:-) -- cya l8r Leon McClatchey leonmcclatchey@homemail.com (Win95 Box) - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

Yep, I've looked at it, (well actually emacs) but I keep getting lost when I try to do simple scripts. So for that I've been using the internal editor in mc. Haven't really looked at xemacs itself yet, but from what I understand, it is an excellent programming tool. Has a lot of built in capabilities as far as fomatting for different languages and things? I do know that I don't like "vi" very much, it kind of reminds me too much of the old dos edlin, except that at least with "vi" you do have the capability of looking at your entire page:=)

A bit bloated for a text editor for my tastes. I realize that emacs is much more than just a text editor, but I prefer Visual Slick Edit for programming and vi for text editing.
BTW, how in the world do you add so much to your signature file? I just added my Linux User Number and netscape warns me that I've exceed the 4 line limit for my signature file?
Out of courtesy for others you should limit your sig to 4 lines, however you can have the complete King James bible as your sig if you want. - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

Hey look, I'm down from 60k to 9 lines! Anyhow, I'm not one to get too picky about limits like these, ya aughta see what I do about speed limits ;-). I treat them as recomanded minimums. What would you recommend for writing letters:-) I've fell a bit behind on my Land Mail since I've been playing with Linux and this little network I've got going here:-) When I was using OS/2 on a more regular basis, I used IBM Works which I liked because I could format it (created a template for my letters and then just used that to start a new letter). I also like it because it was very user friendly as far as printing color (which I've yet to do from a Linux application) and importing pictures and things. As far as programming goes, about all I've been doing along those lines is a few scripts which I've found the internal editor for "mc" to be well suited to my needs:-)

I can dig that, I used to run a BBS (The Twilight Zone) and used to run "Fidonet" mail, and my connection was a long distance connection, needless to say, whatever increased the "bandwidth" increased the "phone bill":-( At any rate, the reason I was wondering, was because I did like an option that I had with pmmail in os/2 (but haven't found a suitable application yet in Linux) was to add taglines at the end of a message. The application I figured would add maybe 2 or 3 addtional lines to the bottom of a message? Meanwhile, I got it work on the Win95 machine, but haven't been able to get it to work on my Linux box. Everytime I send a message out, Netscape sends me a copy unless I specifically go into the address option and remove my name. (Don't have any real affect on anything but my local machines since it sends the copy to the "local user". I use Applix. I have used Staroffice, and I like Applix better. I haven't used Wordperfect so I don't know about it. I like wysiwyg word processors for stuff like that. LyX, a quasi-WYSIWYG front-end to LaTeX, is probably your best bet for letters. The LyX developers don't like some aspects of WYSIWYG word processers, hence my use of "quasi." (For instance, LyX automatically takes care of adding spaces between paragraphs and the like, once you've configured it.) It's a different word processor "paradigm" (although I hate this word) altogether. The version of LyX included with 5.2 offers a nice letter template. Just fill in the blanks with your name and address. If you don't need dead-tree hard copies (i.e., you just want to edit e-mail or online documents), check out the editor vi (or its vamped-up, GUI-fied version, VIM 5.1). It sizzles. -- Glenn -- - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

I used to use Wordperfect and Wordstar 4 dos. In os2, IBMworks was my favorite. I don't like "Win's Write" at all (Ibmworks spoiled me along those lines). I have thought about Applix, but to tell ya the truth, I haven't got 250 bucks or so to "splurge" on a wordprocessor I don't know enough about. I did think about checking out Staroffice, but there I'm just a little bit limited on disk space:-( But I do like wysiwyg processors, but due to space or whatever, It looks like I'm going to have to learn how to embed latex commands in anything I want to do:-( (Either that or use Netscape Composer to write letters with:-) -- cya l8r Leon McClatchey leonmcclatchey@homemail.com Linux User 78912 (Linux Box) - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
