samba and unix access to shares
Hello fellow linux friends. I'm wondering how best to support both samba access and linux access to shares. With Samba, I usually do accees by creating a unix Group for the share, restircting access, to the group, and forcing the group parameter when writting. Then I can controll access by adding removing users from the group. Unfortunatetly, when a user accesses a file via linux, his primary group is used. Is there a way to force linux to use a "directory assigned group" instead of the users primary group when writing to a directory? Jerry

Short answer here is yes. ;-) Check out the recent discussion titled "How can I do this?". Basically you need to chmod g+s the directory. I would also suggest using the inherit permissions setting for your Samba shares. This, in combination with the above, will be more flexible. HTH, Louis
Hi, I'm running Suse 9.1. I like to use Kmail as my mail client, however if I try to send an email via SMTP Kmail reports that there was an error and it wont send it. It doesn't report any more info and the settings are correct, this email has been sent using Mozilla on the same PC and that works fine. never had problems on earlier versions of Kmail, it's frustrating that it doesn't give any indication as to why it can't send the mail. I can receive mail no problem, every other fuction works fine. Any ideas? Thanks in advance. Matthew

Can you see the attempt going out (using ethereal or tcpdump) or returned error messages?

I wish I was running Linux at the moment, and I could tell you exactly, but there's something in Kmail preferences under sending, if I remember right, regarding SMTP that has to be set to true, or something. Poke around there and see if in't more-or-less obvious. I know for sure it won't send if you don't set this up. The setup should be under >settings>configure Kmail. Instructions are found on pp 258 ff in the 9.1 Professional User Guide. Probably someone using Kmail and SMTP can tell you more, if this is insufficient. --doug
In answer to the question KMail does not attempt to send the email, can't see it doing anything externally. The only error is Failed to Send message, which comes up straight away. Really no idea what this is as there isn't any info to go on. Matthew

open ~/<user-name>/.kde/share/config/kmailrc and post the section "[Transport 1]" {and "[Transport 2]" if you have it}. Be sure to alter any information that you feel is private. you should have something like: [Transport 1] authtype=PLAIN encryption=NONE host=smtp-server.somewhere.roadrider.com localHostname= name=<some-user>@somewhere.roadrider.com pass=<none of your buisiness> port=25 precommand= specifyHostname=false storepass=false user= -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org HOG # US1244711 Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/photos
