Hello everyone: I'm having problems copying files from Linux (SuSE 8.1) into my Windows partitions. I have a 30 gig HD (5 for windows [windows1 [drive C] & windows2 [drive D] and the remainder for Linux [ /data1 [currently empty], /usr, /opt, etc.] If a file already exists on either Windows drive, then I can overwrite it. But, if I try to copy a new file to either Windows drive, I get an "Access denied, Cannot write to ... " alert. The fstab file shows the following information: /data1 = mount point: /data1 device = /dev/hda12 windows1 = mount point: /msdos1 device = /dev/hda1 windows2 = mount point: /msdos2 device = /dev/hda5 However, when I go to the desktop icon and review the 'properties' features, both windows1 [drive C] and /data1 have the same address /dev/hda12! This path is correct for /data1 in the fstab file but not for windows1 (/dev/hda1). Question: How to I correct the path in windows1 to show /dev/hda1 ? Question: Is this causing the inability for me to copy files to either of these drives? Of course, any help greatly appreciated. Cheers, Mike

Right click on the desktop icon, go to properties and modify the setting for the partition. -- Ken Schneider unix user since 1989 linux user since 1994 SuSE user since 1998

On my machine this happens when I try to write as user. If I am root writing is done ok. I learned to simply open konqueror as super user whenever I intend to write stuff to the windos drives. Richard

The SuSE install of 8.2 set up /windows/C for me, and it's owned by root:users, mode 775, so it's writeable by anyone in group users. It's described thus in /etc/fstab: /dev/hda1 /windows/C vfat users,gid=users,umask=0002,iocharset=iso8859-1,code=437 0 0 You should be able to achieve the same with suitable adjustments of mount options, ownerships and permissions. Mike should do what Ken said as well ... HTH Fergus
