SuSE 10.1 and Compiz Nice Job!
Hi All, No questions today just to congratulate the SuSE team on the new incarnation of the SuSE linux effort on the Desktop. I think although the addition of compiz added with ne Xgl are eye candy but there is definitely this is a BIG improvement the for linux adoption as a desktop and the way we user interact with our PC. Please keep on with your good work and please continue the integration with KDE as there is definitely a place for it in the future of SuSE/Novell effort. Again congratulation to All the SuSE team. |__|___|___|__\\|// - ?__|___|_____|___|_____| |__|___|___|__(o o)______|___|_____|___|_____| |__|___|___oOOO(_)OOOo____|___|_____|___|_____| email : ephlodur@rocketmail.com What we need is Awareness we can't get carelless. --------------------------------- Blab-away for as little as 1¢/min. Most users think it is eye candy, just like they think Apple's QuartzExtreme (also OpenGL framebuffer-based) is too. In reality, both are _much_faster_ and _more_efficient_ at 2D too -- than using windows in over-lapping system memory. The only "eye candy" non-sense right now is Windows Graphics Foundation (WGF) 1.1 (based on DirectX 9) going into Vista -- WGF 2.0 (based on DirectX 10, pushed back to 2008) is more on-par with QuartzExtreme or Xgl. There are pluses and minues to both the Xgl (SuSE preferred) and X11 +Composite (Fedora/nVidia preferred) approaches. I tend to like the Xgl approach myself, but I can see why nVidia might see otherwise on Xgl. In any case, I just think its "about damn time" GUIs got out of the '80s and glad to see SuSE pushing it forward. ;-> -- Bryan P.S. Probably the most under-appreciated API right now is Sun's Looking Glass. It too has been dismissed as "eye candy." But anyone who has actually read the API knows it's forward-thinking. E.g., today, to add any innovative _input_ (as well as output) functionality, you've got to add hacks upon hacks in the windowing system. Looking Glass has a concept called the "picker" and a complete API built around it. Where would the "picker" be useful? Did you know the technology that can track your eyeballs and identify where you are focusing on the screen has been feasible since the '90s and could be commodity today? The problem is that the legacy windowing system approaches aren't designed for such "alternative input." Wouldn't it be nice to bring a window to the foreground by merely looking at it? Looking Glass handles such multiple device 3D input natively, as well as various "eye candy." And it's not only not science fiction, it doesn't cost much in hardware to do. The problem continues to be '80s GUI design at the heart of OSes. -- Bryan J. Please don't miss understand me I'm totally happy with this new way of interacting with my PC and it does make my user experience more pleasurable. I have try the Sun Looking glass the liveCD that was put out but I think in general the hardware is simply no ready for that. I agree with you on all that you have said and I think that my with Xgl and compiz graphic does respond faster I'm like you, I think its about time that we have the new Generation of GUI.
I think its good also that SuSE/Novell is moving in that direction.

I'm just saying that it's the normal evolution of how windowing environments work -- _forget_ the 3D "eye candy" concept for a moment. It is slow and inefficient to keep acting like the GPU and its local framebuffer doesn't exist. Yes, Apple's QuartzExtreme lets Apple do all sorts of effects. But it's primary purpose is to make "regular" 2D _faster_. OpenGL can and is used for 2D, as much as 3D. It's just a standard API for framebuffer -- taking things out of software and putting it into hardware. Overlapping Windows in system memory is slow and inefficient. In fact, the previous "hacks" added to X11 to leverage the GPU have been more of pain, because they didn't use OpenGL. OpenGL is standard and everyone knows how to leverage it. -- Bryan P.S. Coming from defense, I commonly make an analogy to missile defense. People think it's a pipe dream and doesn't work, thinking it's some sort of "new, discrete technology." Missile defense is merely the evolution of air defense -- only more generic and capable. The technology to hit faster moving targets with raw kenetic energy has existed for a long time. It is not only real, it works a heck of a lot better for shooting down aircraft as well obliterating incoming re-entry vehicles (let alone knocking out exo-atmospheric targets)! In fact, we're not only stupid to still be using "old SAMs," but we've paid way too much money for "limited ones." In the same regard, technology for using GPU framebuffer for _all_ windowing/plane operations is not only real, but it works a heck of a better and more efficient for "normal" operations. It's not a "new, discrete technology." In fact, we're not stupid for not moving to GPU-framebuffer sooner, we've made too many hacks for "limited" acceleration (and buggy) attempts prior. -- Bryan J. We are going out of topic with this for the list. Having said that, I will simply add, when you have to do too many hack in a code it is best to rewrite it from scratch. I'm exactly in that same situation where I had to maintain a code and add some additional features and get it to work. After spending much time finding way to add theses features and when additional feature was requested. I realize that this code base would not maintainable and at this point it is probably best to rewrite this in a OO type with clear interface.
I really like the new « eye candy » and more that SuSE/Novell was the first to really bring this new way in the user's hand. This is one more argument to convince the non-believers that Linux is becoming a real contenter in the new war for the Desktop or at least a good alternative.
Cheers.
