[opensuse] x1600pro ATI and Suse10.3
Hi I am trying to figure out how to make this ati software, I got the newest driver 8.42, installed, got to see the gears spinning on the popup window but when I try to access the catalyst control center, it sends messages saying that my ati driver is not working properly or my card has not support, I had it working on suse 10.2 but I don't know what is wrong with this part, I tried building that xorg-x11-libX11-7.2 but no game, I read that the x1600 were reporting problems with this driver, I tried then using one of the older drivers, but same result. Has anybody tried making this model from ati to work and got sucess with it? Any comments would be welcome Thanks Jose -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hi Jose, can you try procedure described in http://en.opensuse.org/ATI_Radeon_Xpress The gears are spinning with some relative low rate with opensource 'radeon' driver. -- Regards, Rajko. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hi Masaru Followed your instructions, but after rebooting I can't start x, I get all sort of messages, I reverted to original xorg.conf, and fixed the sync parameters, but see an improvement on the gears, but the xorginfo still thinks I am using Mesa Masaru Nomiya wrote:

Hi Masaru, I got it working, now I installed compiz-fusion, but for some reason, it's very very slow, just to get a click or type anything takes minutes to see the result, have you experienced this or anybody? Don't know why it's behaving like this Thanks again for your time and advise Jose Masaru Nomiya wrote:

yeap, tried it, same problem very very slow, if I click on any menu, nothing shows up, I know compiz is working because I can action the cubes and I see the effects on the frames, but I am practically stuck Rajko M. wrote:

Have you tried this? http://en.opensuse.org/ATI_Radeon_Xpress
I got locked computer every time before I run: aticonfig --initial --input=/etc/X11/xorg.conf
This should work for other Radeon XPRESS cards.
The second line with sax is probably overkill, as all that is needed is module 'dri' as Masaru described.
yeap, tried it, same problem very very slow, if I click on any menu, nothing shows up, I know compiz is working because I can action the cubes and I see the effects on the frames, but I am practically stuck
Can you post /var/log/Xorg.0.log and /etc/X11/xorg.conf ?

This is seems somewhat modest. Try to replace this section with: Section "Monitor" Identifier "Monitor[0]" UseModes "Modes[0]" EndSection This will allow Xorg server to setup monitor on it's own which helped me to setup dual screen when sax2 couldn't see 2 monitors.
Suse103:/var/log # cat Xgl.0.log ...
:-) Now, while I look again in /etc/X11/xorg.conf can you post: cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log not Xgl.0.log. Xgl is listed as X server, but it works on top of Xorg, so we need Xorg.0.log to see what fglrx driver did. Probably 3D is not enabled.

This is seems somewhat modest. Try to replace this section with:
Section "Monitor" Identifier "Monitor[0]" UseModes "Modes[0]" EndSection
This will allow Xorg server to setup monitor on it's own which helped me to setup dual screen when sax2 couldn't see 2 monitors.
Suse103:/var/log # cat Xgl.0.log

:-)
Now, while I look again in /etc/X11/xorg.conf can you post:
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log
not Xgl.0.log. Xgl is listed as X server, but it works on top of Xorg, so we need Xorg.0.log to see what fglrx driver did. Probably 3D is not enabled.

Sucess!! I endup disabling xgl, but then I went into the software management, and checked what version of fglrx was active according to Suse, it was pointning to the new driver, without uninstalling I selected the lower version and that led to suse wanting to install the proper version of the driver again, I went with it, and after that I opened the xlgfr gui management interface and I selected enable compiz and enable compiz-fusion, rebooted and now I have compiz fully functional, only flaw I detected it's that if I raise my resolution above 1024x764 that disabled 3d and good bye compiz with that, is this a known bug?, or is supposed to work with any resolution allowed by the driver? https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=338790 is the only one that has ATI graphic adapter and compiz in name. The resolution problem can be bug, there was one thread about low resolution on monitor that can give much higher. The problem was how monitor was presented to SaX2. The size was 15" and graphic driver used 800x600 which is native resolution for that size. Looking in your xorg.conf from previous posts, it seems that you have more luck: DisplaySize 305 230 is also 15". If you monitor is 17" that can be corrected in YaST > Hardware > Graphic Card and Monitor. When window opens press button Change in the same line with monitor name. It will open second window where you can select tab Display Size, and correct monitor size. From your Xorg.0.log is obvious: 1- ATI driver can't read EDID information from monitor and set it up automatically, 2- your card has 2 VGA connectors and monitor is currently connected to second. That should not make difference, but in some cases it can: 1- graphic card has no connected pins that are used to read EDID information from second VGA connector (hardware error) 2- driver is programmed to read first VGA connector, but not second (software error) I already wrote about this in one of previous emails. What I did with older monitors is to check display size, horizontal and vertical frequencies (third tab Sync Frequencies), with monitor manual or manufacturer web page.

Hi Rajko, You know what, I think I solved the mistery, or at least figured out, what happens it's that I was using the configure desktop option, but instead I should have used sax2 instead to change the resolution, the ati config software keeps poping up a window saying that either there is not driver installed or is not working properly, so I can't use that piece of software at the moment to configure settings, but seems to be working with sax2, I haven't tried the max resolution I can get out of my monitor, but for now, I was able to go to a higher resolution. Again thanks for all of your help Cheers! Jose Rajko M. wrote:

Hi Rajko,
You know what, I think I solved the mistery, or at least figured out, what happens it's that I was using the configure desktop option, but instead I should have used sax2 instead to change the resolution, the ati config software keeps poping up a window saying that either there is not driver installed or is not working properly, so I can't use that piece of software at the moment to configure settings, but seems to be working with sax2, I haven't tried the max resolution I can get out of my monitor, but for now, I was able to go to a higher resolution.
Those wouldn't be /usr/lib/libGL.so (.1) (.1.2) and /usr/lib/libIndirect.so.1 (.1.2) would it?

The radeon drivers and libraries seem to be having major problems, especially in my case. I have 3 semi-related bugs open dealing with the driver and library issues. The gory details are at: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=338930 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=338947 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=340459 Let us cross our fingers that "progress" will be made. The drivers on my laptop with the mobility radeon 9700 are so crippled the only way I can log in and log out without the system hanging is NO 3D at all. Instead of the wonderful compiz I used to enjoy on the laptop, now frame rates are barely over 200 fps. Hopefully, this issue the issue with the ATI drivers and libraries is getting some attention. To Novell's credit, they are very aware of the issue, but are somewhat hamstrung with the closed source reverse-engineered driver and the fglrx driver AMD is putting out is well out of step with the needed libraries. Good luck with your issues. -- David C. Rankin, J.D., P.E.
