In the very beginning we had SuSE, since Novell is aboard it is called SUSE and nowadays the guys would like to see openSUSE. SCNR The standard -- open source -- driver for nvidia graphics chips "nv" does not support 3D graphics by default. If you prefer 3D graphics -- not a must -- you might need to install the closed source driver "nvidia". More details can be found here: http://en.opensuse.org/NVIDIA
- wireless, sigh.
- does anyone know what wifi-hardware is inside the box? - drivers? - links?
The simple command "hwinfo --wlan" should give you (and us) some useful information. The lines containing "vendor:", "device:" and "driver:" are most useful. Another command to call could be "lspci -nn". -- Never give up ! Best regards / Gruß, Reinhard. "Software is like a parachute. Hi Reinhard , I think you cut my lines off :
No. I replied directly to Verner's OP. So I didn't cut off your lines ...
Hi Verner what do you mean by hardware inside the box ? in the Pavillion ?
Well, I assume that he doesn't know which hardware is in his box ...
looks as if Verner wants information on the wifi part ?
Are you refering to my side-note regarding nvidia ? You are not very precise here ! If your comment refers to my additions to the nvidia controller you should place your comment in the right place ... And: What do you think you the command "hwinfo --wlan" delivers ?
or maybe I'm wrong
I don't think so ... -- Never give up ! Best regards / Gruß, Reinhard. "Software is like a parachute. It doesn't work if it is not open." -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

ah ups see that the re: is missing. With Verner wondered if he wants information on his wifi-card. Like Verner have a HP Pavilion and haven't figured out how to make my wifi work yet, maybe Verner has the same aspect to solve. ran the su and your command hwinfo --wlan and interesting things shows up :)

You will have to use fwcutter to extract the firmware files from the windows driver bcmwl5. Those files will go into the /lib/firmware directory. Then bcm43xx will load the firmware into the wireless chip and it should become active. Currently bcm43xx only works with V3 firmware files, not V4 which may be in some of the later bcmwl5 files. If bcm43xx does not work, you will have to blacklist bcm43xx and use ndiswrapper. I have the dv6125 and use ndiswrapper (1.31) because bcm43xx cannot identify the broadcom chip (idenified as a dell 1390). You did not indicate if your running 32 or 64 bit. Remember that you will need the 64bit windows drivers for ndiswrapper if your running 64 bit. Should have been identified when you installed. I'd bet on Broadcom, although the HP site lists 3 different models, two of which also might have intel wireless. Best check on the XP side of the house. The info should be there. Older Broadcom 43xx are supported in the kernel if you can download the driver, and cut the firmware out of it. You should have the dv6111eu model. Go to the HP site, and search for it. Once you find the correct model, you can go from there. Hi and thanks to all in the list. I did a little digging and found it indeed was BroadCom as guessed. Unfortunately I had to deliver the HP Pavilion, which indeed is a dv6111eu model, to the user. They couldn't wait any longer. And will use it wired so far. I will, however, have to get back to this issue again when they get their wireless up. I'll get the machine back and they 'll want it to go wireless. So I'll get back in a week or two... -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Med venlig hilsen/Best regards Verner Kjærsgaard -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
