Just run "SuSEwatcher" and configure it by right-clicking. Ever since they uploaded a huge kernel update that I can't download over this dial-up connection I've had to remove it since it will always be RED no matter what until I DL it.
I have a trick for those big patches. First, I note the full path (or I get it manually), and then I create a little script...

Thanks for the cool tip Carlos. I may try to get that update after all.

In addition, don't forget the international mirrors. http://www.suse.co.uk/uk/private/download/ftp/int_mirrors.html I have had good luck w/ some of the west coast mirrors. YMMV. Others have reported good results with UK mirrors. I use a similar trick to Carlos and a kernel update which takes us 2 to 3 hours is no big deal, when done in pieces. I do: rpm -v --checksig {name of package}.rpm to verify that I got it all. Mmm, interesting... Ah, I forgot, there is a spanish mirror at "rediris" somewhere, but it is not listed. I have to remember to seek it out next time.

Right. However, I don't know why YOU doesn't do that automatically on its own. Previously, SuSE 8.1, if interrupted, started to download every patch, even if already downloaded and only a few were missing. SuSE 8.2 do not download again the files already downloaded - but it restarts half downloaded files. A nuisance... but why? I'm sure there must be a reason.
I do: rpm -v --checksig {name of package}.rpm to verify that I got it all.
Ah, but I think YOU does it for me, there should be no need to bother - because after I download it in full (by pieces) I pass the files over to YOU. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

Very interesting. Just downloaded one of the latest stable kernel and it is a first time that I got a complete download in a reasonable time. But being a kernel which is not offered in You I assume that Yast will not install it automatically. Think Kpackage will have to do. The script is absolutely fantastic.

Thanks! But, if you picked it from where I said, for SuSE 8.2, or the equivalent path for SuSE 9.0 if you have it, yes, YOU will install it happily. You just have to copy it to the same place where the YOU download process would copy it, which is: /var/lib/YaST2/you/mnt/i386/update/8.2/rpm/i586/ for SuSE 8.2 By the way, to know where to find the ftp path, reading the last file (after firing YOU, seeing there is a kernel waiting, and aborting) helps: /var/lib/YaST2/you/mnt/i386/update/8.2/patches/kernel-* -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 3422 Jan 10 00:36 kernel-51197 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 6137 Feb 21 01:52 kernel-51254 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 4712 Mar 19 00:31 kernel-51297 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 4618 Jul 14 2003 kernel-source-36073 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 3898 Sep 11 2003 kernel-source-41559 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 2339 Dec 5 02:05 kernel-source-51177 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1996 Jan 10 00:36 kernel-source-51199 So, the last patch was kernel-51297; I read the file, and see: k_deflt BuiltFrom: k_deflt-2.4.20-108.src.rpm Version: 2.4.20-108 ## -----> kernel-source <----- Filename: kernel-source.rpm BuiltFrom: kernel-source-2.4.20.SuSE-108.src.rpm Version: 2.4.20.SuSE-108 So I had to download release -108 -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
