OGG or mp3 ENCODING ADVISE
Dear List, What encoders do you recommend and where to get them? I am getting ready to rip my CD to OGG or MP3; I'd like to compare them and then choose, but I do lean towards OGG. I do NOT find any encoders on the 8.0 dist. Where are they or where should I look elsewhere? I am able to ri[p ok. Thanks! .......PeterB

Ogg encoder is already loaded on your system: konqueror / f9 / services (the star at the bottom) / ( load the cd!) audio cd browser. It's drag & drop from there. Limited ogg parameters are setup from: kde control panel / sound / audio cd io-slave / Ogg Vorbis settings I've had good luck with it, although every once in a while there will be a track it just won't encode. -- Jim Barnes -- Certainly the game is rigged. Don't let that stop you; if you don't bet, you can't win. -Lazarus Long -- SuSE linux 8.0, 2.4.18-4GB, KMail 1.4 -- 6:20pm up 12:34, 2 users, load average: 0.00, 0.03, 0.05
I don't know what ogg is, but are you aware that there are several cd players on the market that will decode and play .mp3 files? Completely free of any computer--you can take them to the beach, or on the subway, or whatever. If you're into portable music, you should think about that. --doug At 18:35 06/30/2002 -0600, Jim Barnes wrote:

Thanks Jim, that was quick! I opened a new Konqi, hit f9 and there itt was. BUT the knoqi window extends below the bottom of my screen. I tried to re size it but "Size" only offers me left and right arrows NOT verticle Can I resolve this? Hepl! PeterB On Sunday 30 June 2002 19:35, Jim Barnes wrote:

I get this same error if I don't have a cd in the drive (cdrom), no error logged to /var/log/messages though. Do you have multiple drives? Audio cd browser doesn't read from my cdrw. -- Jim Barnes -- Certainly the game is rigged. Back to kde control panel / sound / audio cd io-slave. Check the CDDA Settings tab. Is your cdrom listed? (/dev/cdrom is what mine says) -- Jim Barnes -- Certainly the game is rigged. This error looks like the same one I got with my workstation in the office. The fix for that machine was to make sure the hd was master and the CDROM that was attached was slave. The machine at work was a Compaq and they often do silly stuff like set both devices "cable select" which is bad..very bad. Check to see if your cdrom is either master if it's the only device on the EIDE chain or if it's slave if it's attached to the hd on the EIDE chain. * Peter B Van Campen (peterb924@ameritech.net) [020630 18:30]: ::Hi again, :: ::My /var/log/messages is filling up with these:Jun 30 19:49:59 linux kernel: " ::" ::ATAPI device hdd: ::Jun 30 19:49:59 linux kernel: Error: Illegal request -- (Sense key=0x05) ::Jun 30 19:49:59 linux kernel: Invalid field in command packet -- (asc=0x24, ::ascq=0x00) ::Jun 30 19:49:59 linux kernel: The failed "Read CD" packet command was: ::Jun 30 19:49:59 linux kernel: "be 04 00 00 2b 57 00 00 01 f8 00 00 " ::Jun 30 19:49:59 linux kernel: hdd: packet command error: status=0x51 { ::DriveReady SeekComplete Error } ::Jun 30 19:49:59 linux kernel: hdd: packet command error: error=0x54 ::Jun 30 19:49:59 linux kernel: ATAPI device hdd: ::Jun 30 19:49:59" ::This is with an audio cd in the drive, is this normal msg or a real error? -=Ben --=====-----=====-- mailto:ben@whack.org --=====-- Tell me what you believe..I tell you what you should see. -DP --=====-----=====--
Dear Ben & SuSE'ers The bug turned out to be a somewhat non-standard Panasonic CDROM device; I swapped it out for an ASUS CDROM and BANG! audio cds are completely available in Konqi! I love it! The Panasonic was a 5 disc changer that was given to me; it worked w/o error or complaint in M$ stuff. It was plugged 'Slave' and the new one went to the same cable connector Thanks! Ben and everyone! .........PeterB On Sunday 30 June 2002 21:21, Ben Rosenberg wrote:
