Javier, Are you asking if there is a way to have an X-login screen? If this is what you want, go into the YaST System Administration -> Login Configuration and select graphical login. Be sure X works correctly by running xdmrc from the command line. You can get back to a tty by hitting Ctl + Alt + F1 or F2, F3 ... F6. Unfortunately (unfortunate for the new administrator) this safety feature can be disabled, and is in certain default configurations. If your X is not working, you may end up with a situation in which you cannot get into the system to stop it from continually trying to run. If that happens you may have to take the system down hard and boot from CD or floppy. If this does not answer your question. Please let us know. HTH, (hope this helps) Steve

No, i just want to see the system messages ( /var/log/messages) that are sent to the /dev/console device , and the app for that is xconsole but only root have read perms so the "Couldn't open console" appears. "Steven T. Hatton" escribió:

Look at using sudo to allow any user to run
sudo /usr/bin/tail -f /var/log/messages

Hello, Prehaps you want root-tail? In a terminal I type < xhost + > so root can use the xserver. Then su and type root-tail /var/log/messages and the last 10 lines will appear on your desktop and scroll as new lines are added. Have a look at man root-tail for some parameters. I use root-tail -g -100-100 -fork -shade /var/log/messages,red (or green or....) -- TRBishop tb64710@alltel.net RLU#12043 SuSE 7.0.Pro / BeOS 5 Pro
