[opensuse] What's the difference between a 'kernel-default' and a 'kernel-desktop'
Guys, This is just looking for a generic difference. What does the desktop kernel provide that the default or pae doesn't or vice versa? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. look at /boot/config* This will allow you to analyze kernels. -- -Alexey Eromenko "Technologov" -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

The answer I was looking for doesn't presuppose I already have them both installed... -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. Hello Wiki-List,
I think it would be grate [great] if there would be an article about the kernel and especially the varieties in openSUSE and some (external) links to further information.
I may be able to deliver something like a stub or be used as a dummy to test if a real article is easy to understand but I do think it would be a good idea if someone else/some other people would do the real work - some people how do really now how the kernel works and how making the kernel (technically and socially) works...
Greetings pistazienfresser -- - openSUSE 11.2 with GNOME 2.28.2 (or KDE 4.3.5) and Kernel Linux 2.6.31.12-0.2-default (or pae, Ubuntu 10.4 LTS 'lucid' 2.6.33-22-genetic, MS Win XP) - Samsung X20 (SX20S) with Pentium M 740 (1730 MHz), Intel graphic 915GM, 1400x1050 - openSUSE profile: https://users.opensuse.org/show/pistazienfresser -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

In a nutshell: kernel-default runs on some older hardware that kernel-desktop does not support anymore. kernel-desktop has a few settings changed so that it performs better on a desktop system. The list of modules - and therefore the hardware support - should be the same with the noted exception that some old cpus will only work with kernel- default, Andreas -- Andreas Jaeger, Program Manager openSUSE, aj@{novell.com,opensuse.org} Twitter: jaegerandi | Identica: jaegerandi SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, GF: Markus Rex, HRB 16746 (AG Nürnberg) Maxfeldstr. 5, 90409 Nürnberg, Germany GPG fingerprint = 93A3 365E CE47 B889 DF7F FED1 389A 563C C272 A126

Is there a list of these? Or is it that the Desktop only supports i686 and up and the default will run on 586(like the K6s that seem to be classed as 586 by some)? Thanx -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
