[SuSE Linux] Help w/ Linux Boot Menu under Win95
Well, my one major complaint against SuSE is the lack of good documentation. I know that RedHat kicks the crap out of SuSE with regard to this, and that SuSE better get its butt in gear if it wants to compete (in the US) with distributions supported by the likes of Netscape and Intel. I have followed exactly the instructions for a boot menu under windoze95 on p. 39 of the SuSE 5.3 manual. It doesn't work!!! The only way that I can get anything to work is to just call "loadlin hda6" from my autoexec.bat, and to forget about anything regarding linux in my config.sys. Can someone who has successfully gotten a boot menu running under win95 PLEASE send me a copy of their autoexec.bat, config.sys, and the files in the loadlin directory of the root dos/win drive. ( I have to keep microslop windows around for the girlfriend) I am giving SuSE every chance, but when something like this happens it is hard. And, last question, how is it that one really sets up this loadlin stuff in the first place? You can run "setup" on the CD, but this of course copies the image of a generic kernel to the newly created loadlin directory, rather than the kernel that one has customized. THX in advance chris - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
why not just use lilo to boot windows for you. This is what I do: I installed lilo. Then I added entries in yast configuration of lilo to boot windows or one of the several kernels I have (2.1.129, 2.0.35SuSE, 2.0.36std, 2.0.36cust, WIN are valid responses to the LILO: prompt). This is as flexible as any reasonable person can expect. Read up on the yast lilo configuration.

One way of updating your zimage file in the loadlin directory is to mount the dos partition under Linux and just copy the /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/zImage file to /dos/loadlin/zimage if /dos is the mountpoint for your dos partition. Getting Linux added to the bootmenu of win95 is something I have not done yet, but I have found the manual that comes with SuSE5.3 to be very good and accurate. Kieran

Hi: I also have to disagree. The SuSE manual is unusually good; far more complete than my RedHat manual. The good manual is one of reasons I opted for the SuSE distribution. My only hope/suggestion is that, at some point, the SuSE fellows find the time and resources to have the English version manual edited by a native speaker. For example, some of the explanations appear to be direct, perhaps word-for-word, translations from German. The result is sometimes very strange :). But, it is far better than if I attempted to translated into German!

I offered to edit the English version some months back, and was told that SuSE now have an American editor for it. It can be a problem though I have found menus several layers down in SO 4.0 still in the original deutsch and it is not always obvious what is meant. As a 'True Brit' I would of course prefer standard English to the colonial version imposed on us most of the time. - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A</A>> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A</A>>

I totally disagree with you on this. SuSE has the best documentation I have seen from any Linux distro, bar none.
Why don't you just use lilo as the bootmanager and have it default to window$. Try looking at pages 117-138 of the same manual. It explains lilo. My personal opinion: forget loadlin. Lilo is much better.
Can someone who has successfully gotten a boot menu running under win95 PLEASE send me a copy of their autoexec.bat, config.sys, and the files in the loadlin directory of the root dos/win drive. ( I have to keep microslop windows around for the girlfriend)
No problem. She will still be able to use window$
I am giving SuSE every chance, but when something like this happens it is hard.
Not every chance; Give it another chance. ;) <snipped>

[snip] I have to take exception to this. Compare manuals. Compare content. SuSE is immeasurably superior to Red Hat. For example, after installing RH 5.1, my eth0 would not initialize. No explanation in the book. The same thing happened when I installed SuSE 5.3, but a quick trip to the manual explained exactly how the initialization process worked. One quick edit and eth0 was up and talking. Another example. Red Hat's version of sound on non-SoundBlaster sound cards - too bad, it's not happening. SuSE supplies OSS, instructions on how to install it, and you can use YaST to configure it. Beats RH's sndconfig hands down. Superiority in product does not equate to sales (ie, Beta and DAT) for the masses - only for the informed. This is why you and I use Linux - we are informed. Marketing is what counts. Look at Microsoft (you knew it was coming). They are an awesome marketing machine pumping out products that are clearly inferior to the likes of WordPerfect and Linux. My $0.02 plus some.
