[opensuse] OSS 13.2 experiences
Some thoughts on my experiences in upgrading from OSS 13.1 to 13.2, in case other people are pondering upgrades or see similar issues ... Upgraded my laptop. This is an ancient Toshiba Satellite with Radeon Xpress. Ran beautifully with opensuse since version 12.1. I have been upgrading it with each release with no issues at all. Upgraded it to 13.2. No problems during the upgrade. Everything runs fine except that I have an annoying screen flicker now that I cannot get rid of. The screen flickers about once every 5 seconds. Not unlivable, but annoying. Setting nomodeset on kernel boot options removes the flicker, but then leaves me with a much worse screen resolution, which makes the machine unusable. This laptopn runs XFCE. Upgraded a physical desktop machine. This machine has seen life starting as opensuse 11.X. I have been upgrading it with each major release. This machine is primarily used remotely via remote GUI (used to be VNC, then Nomachine's NX, then FreeNX, then x2go.) Machine ran beautifully with xfce remotely via x2go with no issues. Since the upgrade, the x2goclient cannot launch xfce, gnome, nor kde. I can start xterm via x2go, and then start xfce from within xterm, but I do not get the full desktop, and each application seems to try to launch in a separate desktop and freezes. No resolution so far. Tried FreeNX, and got KDE to work with FreeNX, but still cannot gnome or xfce to work remotely. Test machine built with oss 13.2 from scratch. I build this as a VM primarily to troubleshoot issues I am seeing with the machine above. I see the same issues here, x2go does not launch any desktop. Once I resolve the GUI issues, I plan on playing with btrfs. If the GUI isses cannot be resolved, I may downgrade the laptop and the physical desktop machine back to oss13,1 and wait out 13.2 Regards, -- --Moby They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. -- Benjamin Franklin -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Regards,
I also saw very few problems with this release. I was running 12.3 but did a fresh install of 13.2 because I didn't want to jump that far and I had to repartition my disk anyway. It went smoothly. Everything works. A not regarding your Video card...... Back when I was running 12.3 I used THIS repository with my Older Radeon x1400 card which gave excellent results, perfect video even with the bling turned on. Better than any prior version of OpenSuse on this laptop. http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/X11:/XOrg/openSUSE_12.3/ This repro had very good drivers for the AMD cards, especially the older ones but other people had problems with the Nvidia drivers from that repository. For 13.2, this would be the proper Repro: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/X11:/XOrg/openSUSE_13.2/ That being said, I haven't found any reason to switch to that repository on 13.2 with my laptop, the video continues to perform perfectly with the drivers that came with the distro.*** If I did find an issue I would switch to that repro in a heart beat because bugs are being addressed all the time in there. The biggest annoyance is that it is updated frequently. So you might just try adding the above repro and allowing vendor change and see if it helps. Once you upgrade once from that repro, you can turn vendor change off and they will continue to come from there. *** Caveat: The only video issue is a slight jaggie when resizing a Google Chrome or Chromium window. NO Other program has exhibited any such problem. -- After all is said and done, more is said than done. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Thanks John. I tried the repo you mention on the laptop with the flicker, no joy. The flicker is still there. I am going to now try that repo on the machine where x2go has stopped working and see if it helps in that matter any. -- --Moby They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. -- Benjamin Franklin -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Be sure you select the radeon specific packages out of that directory. You may need to manually select xorg-x11-server-7.6_1.16.1-359.1.x86_64.rpm and Mesa-10.3.2-410.1.x86_64.rpm (assuming you installed a 64bit version of 13.2) to get it to force the switch to that repro. Those two packages and the radeon ones (except debug) will usually trigger all the other ones to come over as long as allow vendor change is set. And you have to reboot, because so much of this is loaded by systemd. I never had to do anything to get this to work just fine. In KDE congifure desktop, Display config, select the laptop screen, then set the resolution at max (it usually won't allow you to exceed the capabilities of the physical screen. Under Advanced, I have Auto selected, but you might play with the other refresh settings. zero flicker here. But My card is different -- After all is said and done, more is said than done. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Thanks John. I verified that the rpms you mention are indeed installed and they are. Still have the flicker. However, the flicker is livable, once about every 5 seconds but it is fairly fast and quick, and luckily I am do not suffer from epilepsy! I tried the repo you mention on the other 2 machines that are used via x2go, and no change there. I still cannot run xfce (or gnome for that matter) via x2go, nor via FreeNX, nor via nomachine. That has now become a much bigger issue for me since I have a number of users that require that functionality, so I think I may have to hold off moving all my machines to OSS 13.2. I will start another thread on the list about x2go. For what it's worth, I have a "farm" of OSS machines running as VMs where users access XFCE desktops via x2go. If I can get XFCE working over x2go on oss132, then I can upgrade across the board.

Irregardless as to whether any these suggestions actually fix your issue please first disable any added repos such as X11:XORG and `zypper dup` back to the initial release with all updates installed. Then please submit a bug report so hopefully this can be resolved and an update can be released. You said that you have and old Xpress GPU in the laptop. Are you using the non-OSS proprietary driver or an openSource driver? If you are using the OSS driver you could try to install the non-OSS driver and see if that makes a difference. ATI Info: http://en.opensuse.org/AMD NVIDIA Repo: ftp://download.nvidia.com/opensuse/13.2/ You could also try: 1: Add OBS X11:Xorg Repo http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/X11:/XOrg/openSUSE_13.2/ set it to priority 1 and perform a `zypper refresh` and `zypper dup` to get the latest Xorg and OSS driver builds. Reboot for changes to take affect. If this does not correct it then try adding:OBS Kernel:openSUSE-13.2/standard http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Kernel:/openSUSE-13.2/standard/ for the latest kernel build and patches for the openSUSE 13.2 kernel and perform a `zypper refresh` and `zypper dup`. Reboot for changes to take effect. If this does not correct it and you are not using closed source drivers then you could try moving to kernel stable: OBS Kernel:stable/standard http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Kernel:/stable/standard/ to get the latest kernel build, If you driver supports the latest kernel release. Reboot for changes to take affect. I run both Kernel:Standard/stable and X11:XORG repos but I do not use any closed source GPU drivers. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Your own link says the Non OSS drivers won't work on his card. Its been abandoned by AMD. The only drivers that will work are the community drivers which cover his card:
RS400/RS480 Radeon XPRESS 200(M)/1100 IGP
Then you turn around and tell him to add the same repository he you just told him to abandon.
